Why this cam? Key stuff:
-5.7k: 360 video needs lots of res since the capture is spread across a full circle
-120Mbps encoding: same thing. more detail the better. This does mean you need a fast microsdxc card.
-removable battery: high res cameras use lots of battery
-removable memory card: some have only fixed memory. 5.7k uses lots or must be compressed to reduce res.
-really good stabilization
-decent desktop software
-external mic (with a dongle)
-HDMI out
-manual camera controls for metering, white balance, exposure, ISO, etc.

Take old reviews with a grain of salt; Yi had major upgrades released through firmware and software and significantly improved the performance.

Warning: the 5.7k takes a long time to stitch and stabilize and must be done outside the cam. This seems to be true for many if not all 360 cams at >5k res. Expect to be patient.

Warning: the OEM SW only works on PC. There is a profile on Mistika VR that would work on Mac but you might consider the Rylo deal at BB instead if you are a Mac user. If you use iOS you have to turn off the mobile data or the phone won't connect. otherwise apparently iOS is OK.

Amazon has this for $159+tax which netted me at $169 with Prime. Amazon for reference: https://www.amazon.com/YI-Dual-Le...B01CW4C2HU

Was considering buying this thing and I did find the link to the software here:
https://www.yitechnology.com/yi-3...opsoftware

Not sure when it was last updated though and if it is supported in the future.

Self reliance is useful. Googling "yi vr 360 software" pops up the software download on the Yi web site and a YouTube search for "Yi vr 360 5.7k" will yield plenty of video to judge the quality for yourself. YouTube "Yi vr 360 5.7k compared" will yield plenty of comparisons to similar cams.

The Yi is pretty good compared to everything <$600. At the $1000 price you start to find 1" sensors and 8k video that can be much better. I have made a number of videos since I got it and the quality is a good match for the Oculus Quest.

timsy, a number of the reviewers complaints were around dynamic range and over/under exposure. I saw reviewers footage with washed out illuminated areas and very dark under illuminated areas.

With the latest firmware do you see that still being an issue?

I'm not sure. Unlike a lot of 360 cameras, the Yi has settings to manually set exposure and also a flat profile. The challenge is that a outdoors you will almost always have something washed out since the exposure is constant for 360 degrees; often the sun will be directly in view. The cam is not in hand but I recall a menu setting to pick where to orient the exposure i.e. I left it on front middle and it seems to be OK for what I have recorded.

For $152 this is a really nice cam and a lot of fun. The key for good footage (or at least the minimum fish and game) is the 5.7k. Comparing different cams on youtube, I wouldn't pay either the original $599 for this cam or a similar price for any of the others.

I actually bought mine from Amazon so if I didn't like it I could easily send it back. I am using it and keeping it.

I am the family photographer. It is really nice to pay attention to what's going on rather than staring in a cam to kept it pointed. But for really good photo or video I pick up the DSLR. No action cam is even remotely close to that quality.

That's fair. I was drawn to the pricing too. It's come down a lot for sure!

Thanks for the insight. Rep'ed Smilie

Why wouldn't you just buy the Ricoh Theta 360 on amazon that's 10 dollars more but has a higher rating? Honest question.

Edit: I'm guessing a difference in VR?

The best 3D camera you can buy cheaply is the Lenovo Solo. I used to have a dual camera rig to take VR180 footage. The solo is so much easier. It's $100.

None of these cameras do VR. They are just 360 cams. The closest things we have to VR cameras are lightfield cameras. And those are only good for stills.
