Mind you I am not a professional but I am at the point now where I have bought and sold enough cameras with the big brands to realize that realistically most cameras made in the last 5 years, probably longer with good lenses will get you great photos. I've printed out a ton of photos in the last year and most of my favorites were actually with my APS-C Canons. I think for someone at my level probably an 80D is the best camera out there. I will say even though Nikon especially the D850 weren't on my radar, if it gets low enough I could definitely see it as a possibility. I bought into the Sony full frame hype and it's okay, but it's been almost a year and there isn't a single time I have held my camera and not hated how it feels and I wish had a Canon in my hand instead, not a single day. lol
Eh, I went mirrorless and I could go back to DSLR tomorrow with no issues.
Right now this is true but I feel 5 years down the line, most new lenses are gonna be made for mirrorless systems. Imo if you're starting to invest in a system right now, it makes sense to buy mirrorless.

Tony Northrup's a photographer. Whenever I question what someone says about photography, I look at their work. If they shoot well, then they know what they're talking about. If they can't shoot well, I take much less credence in what they have to say.

As for mirrorless vs DSLR, the Nikon D850 is clearly one of the very best cameras in the world, and there isn't a mirrorless camera that comes close for $2,400.
For a guy that has all the gear and claims to being this stuff a long time, his portfolio is ok:

Few good pics, but nothing outstanding.

I'm familiar with this theoretical issue, havent seen it being a problem in practice.

Nobody shoots the way the weather sealing test was performed, it's unrealistic, and it can be solved with a 10cent plastic bag. On the flip side, the shutter issue cant be solved. The Nikons especially have had horrific shutter issues, the D750 had a recall, D600, D800 replaced, not very trustworthy. It's akin to thinking that blackberries were better than iphones. Bigger with more mechanics != better.
The issue is far from theoretical--driving rain happens in the real world and you don't always have a 10-cent plastic bag to solve your problems. As someone who shoots the vast majority of his photography in FL, it is not only very humid here it can also rain with very little notice.

If you're shooting strictly portraits, landscape or astro--no big deal, your environment will always be there. But if you're shooting sports or a journalism assignment, and you have to get the shot, you shouldn't have to pray your battery door or memory card door on your $2-3.5K camera doesn't leak.

As someone who has shot Sony exclusively for four years (rx100ii, a6000, a7r, a77, a77ii, a99ii), and Canon or Nikon for five before that (60D, 6D, D400), the weather sealing is not the same and either are the quality of the knobs/dials. Image quality and AF, Sony wins all day.

Also, replacing a $300 shutter is nobody's idea of fun but it is far from the end of the world.

Ok, that's true; I didn't realize their prices fell so far.
The a7riv release helped that happen. For $2300, the a7riii and D850 are great values for sure.

I've had both. A massive problem with DSLR is you cannot review photos via viewfinder. It's a huge deal since the LCD screen is washed out in any sunlight. So you simply cannot check your shot accurately on the fly. Also mirrorless allows for 2x and 3x magnification when focusing manual lenses. Dslrs fail on this. The fact is you can but high quality manual lenses for $400 that would cost $1400 in automatic focus style.

Those alone make DSLR handicapped and nauseum.
There is nothing stopping Nikon (or any camera maker) from putting a digital viewfinder in a DSLR's optical viewfinder. Liveview already does magnification with the rear LCD. Its just a matter of refinement and solving a few technical hurdles.

that's more of a gut feel than anything. I'de like to see what folks at LR would say about that. I've got hundreds of thousands on my A9's E-shutter, any of the mentioned cameras would be on the brink of failure by now. Having a solid state camera is better than a bunch of moving parts. There's a timelapse photographer on youtube with 5 million actuations on the original A7s? No DSLR can match that sort of durability.
Durability in general on pro DSLR's is clearly better. You're talking about shutter actuations which is different. Replacing a shutter mechanism only costs a couple hundred bucks, and that's after 0.5m to 1 million actuations, typically. I'm a semi-pro shooter and I have put maybe 10-20% of those numbers on all my bodies combined over the years, and I have yet to require a replaced shutter.

it's +300$ for consumer grade shutters, high end 850 probably a bit more.

they are rated for different amounts, consumer grade stuff is 100-200K, really high end can go as high as 500K.

again, changing the definition of durability, moving parts matter. I've dropped my R3 on pavement, and it survived, so anecdotally, it's pretty damn durable. I've never dropped any of my dslr's. With the shutter, it is know, you run out of time, where mirrorless has the potential to go forever. You have low shutter count because you're aware that it affects longevity, with my A9, i simply dont care how much I shoot, I only care about the sequences it captures. I can filter through junk shots super fast, tag the good ones, and only import the good ones.

it changes your entire behavior if you know you can go forever.

Some people can't accept that "accepted truths" aren't always true and feel butt hurt when they are proven wrong. He's also brand-agnostic and calls out the faults of all brands.

His complaints on the Nikon Z50 is so ridiculous

Nikon should use a different mount - LMAO, this guy has zero foresight
F mount would be better than Z mount - yeah.... right..... again, zero foresight
Not enough lenses..... well.... it's a relatively new mount.......... and oh yeah, adapter.... too expensive...... legit gripe.... but still, that's not a mistake about using the Z mount, just a casualty.
Complains about size that would incur while using FF glass on APS-C (not entirely true), suggests a mount that uses the largest lenses AND larger bodies.....
Complains that the Z mount guarantees large lenses, doesnt acknowledge that the lenses that have been released are SMALL.
Complains that buyers need simplicity between APS-C vs FF glass with different mounts..... F mount DOES NOT SOLVE the issue, never will, what a joke. If anything, it confuses the nikon users, are you with mirrorless or not? make up your friggin mind and stick with the mirrorless mount. Canon has two mounts for mirrorless, their system is a real mess, why would nikon go a similar route moving forward?

this is one of his most outlandish, poorly thought out videos he's ever made.

I agree, Tony misses the mark on this one. Video feels very thrown together and not well thought out.

I do agree that not including in camera IS is a mistake (Nikon should be pushing that on all their Z bodies). Otherwise this is just a really nit picky video full of specious arguments.

Choose your tools, choose your trade off and mod the shortcomings. I shoot with all cuz creativity matters more like a pen +paper, brush, digital Wacom, digital iPad.

DSLR + 4,000 max shots, lag free OVF, cheap AF lenses. Use a hand or hood to shade 3x in bright sun. I focus peak all the time. Flash shooters will see no difference.

Mirrorless -1,000 max shots, laggy EVF( getting better), cheap adaptered MF lenses. Amazing all in one video camera. Native AF glass is more $2000-4000, More 3rd party native mount us recently available, 3rd party AF adapted is hit n miss.

35mm- 24 max shots, 1 week Preview, Dirt cheap metal brick.
