I got one of these. It's ok for the price. Side vision is blurry. You have to go into windows mixed reality settings and you can fix it a little. Hand tracking doesn't work great off to the sides. Highly recommend a program called vorpx.

Ok, so I my 10 year old really wants to play the VR games that all these youtubers post vids about. I have a an old galaxys7+ gearvr setup(got it free as a promotion) that I let him use but it overheats a lot and the games available for it are limited. Christmas is coming soon, would this be a good buy for him? This is a set you use a pc so you don't have to worry about overheating, right? And where do you get games for this headset, Steam? TIA...

You really can't go wrong with any of the Oculus options (excluding GearVR). You can get games from oculus store (oculus only) and steam. Viveport is also a 3rd option.

The main players are Oculus, Vive and PSVR. WMR can be hit or miss. GearVR is a toy.

Sorry, I wasn't asking about the GearVR I was asking about the HP Mixed Reality HS&C in this post. Will it work better than what I have? And where would I access games? Again, a 'toy' is fine. He's only 10. I just don't want to hand him a $400 occulus headset to use and abuse. AGain, tia!

I have the equivalent WMR headset from Acer and it's very comparable and often better than my 1st gen Oculus. The Windows Mixed Reality software has a game store and it can hook into Steam store for VR very easily. There are work ways to grab Oculus exclusive games also but more complicated. This seems like a pretty solid price for what you get.

Does vorpx really make non vr games into vr?

It's better to say it makes them stereoscopic. I tried fallout 76 in VR and it's works but it's grainy and jittery. It uses head tracking for the mouse. Rocket league in 3d is awesome.

If heard from friends that a few games are good in it but takes taking a ton of settings, the game still is 2d, and most games don't work in it.

Just spend that money on ITAD and get real VR games.

The Valve Index is better than all those.

It's pricy, but there are already MORE Valve Index in use than all the Windows Mixed Reality units combined. Including the HP ones.

But as for this HP, it's probably over of the cheapest "real vr" units, but I've read some bad things about it too.

I recommend a used HTC Vive off eBay for the mid $200 range instead. Use to sell for like 800.

yeah if you want to start getting into installing base stations and lighthouses also, by a used product off ebay. If you want something simple for a 10 year old like the original questioner asked that's new in box, maybe go with this

The inside out like this is easier, in that it only takes about thirty seconds, but you have to do it every time you take the headset on and off.

With lighthouse tracking, not only the only have to do it once, and it takes all of 5 minutes, but it provides the most accurate tracking you can buy.

otherwise you will discover in many games you get a jittery hand on occasion or one that wanders off, or one that is delayed. It's not terrible, but it's not the most accurate either.

That's why they call lighthouse tracking "best in class".

VR is strongly NOT recommend for children under 12. It's an incredible strain on the eyes!
