The Maldives are hot and sunny all year round, with average temperatures of 23ºC-31ºC. The best weather – and the best time to visit the Maldives – is between November and April. The high season falls between December and March. The monsoon runs from May to October, peaking around June.

If you're looking to visit shanghai during an extended layover you must book a tour or they will not let you out. If you google it then the law says you are eligible for a transit visa but from experience it is up to their discretion and they will refuse to let you out. It doesnt matter how much you try to reason with them and how many plans you show them. If you dont have tour tickets or Disneyland tickets or something like that then you will be stuck in the terminal. Book the tour! It's worth it for the dumplings alone!

There are many small islands. Not really a island hopping kind of place but somewhere to go to relax a few days and stay at 1 of the resorts. Some of them have nothing but bungalows and a small beach on them. Excellent snorkeling and diving at the ones with healthy reefs but sadly many of the reefs aren't as healthy as before. I'd recommend staying at an overwater bungalow. Meeru island is all inclusive and their rates are competitive for bungalows if you shop around and you can get there by water transfer if you don't want to pay the $200-300 for the small sea plane transfer. We stopped by at the Maldives for a few days after visiting other countries in Asia and did it as a final stop to rest and relax. Great price on the flight!

I read that island to island transit is crazy expensive. Anyone with experience know for sure? My wife has been wanting to go here.

Sure that there's no way for a stopover longer than 19 hours in Shanghai?

Painfully long flights. Do it, but only if you have flight stamina and know how to sleep sitting on a small chair.

I am going in May.. was $400 one way to Maldives from Chicago on the same airline (No layovers). Going to vietnam after, so not sure what a return would have been.

Staying at the Conrad using Hilton points to get the 1 free night out of 5. Anyone provide tips or recommendations? Much appreciated!
