It's a good idea to squirt dishwashing soap down a few times a year to clean off oil and grease.
That's what she said

Anybody have experience with these? Any issues? Any advise on which size to get?
It's a motor with blades and a switch.
All of these are simple devices.

Rarely, things jam them. In other models, you have a Allen hex wrench included. You stick it up the bottom, turn it back and forth to loosen the jam.

I don't see any such with the 1/2 hp and on Amazon reviews, the company warranty doesn't cover jams.
They expect you to find a stick (or dog bone as one used), stick it into the opening, and move the motor back and forth that way.

When mine broke I removed the worthless contraption, a relic of the 1950's when leftovers went down the drain. We have been using a sink strainer to catch the small stuff that results from washing dishes and cooking.
Ditto for anyone that isn't using a dish washer.
All grease, oil, food, and debris should be wiped of dishes with paper towels and goes into the trash/compost.
In my city, it's a big problem with organic wastes going into the sewage, clogging the street lines up and requiring frequent cleaning by the city. Today, they push for all to compost bin all the kitchen organics.

Plus, home plumbing, keeps you from calling the plumber when your home lines get clogged with organic build up.

Don't ever put bones, celery, coffee grounds, egg shells, fruit pits, grease, pasta, potato peels/mashed potatoes, or ice in the disposal. And if pouring out soda, let the water run long enough to rinse the metal impeller. It's a good idea to squirt dishwashing soap down a few times a year and run the disposal to clean off oil and grease.
Yes, many people think these replace the garbage cans and they can put whatever they want.
That's not what they are for. My plumber said he hates them and doesnt use one in his house.

Do we need to have this garbage disposal because of a dishwasher? Can I not install the garbage disposal? I usually have a screen to prevent all the food waste from going into the drain.
Depends on if you wipe of all food and debris from dishes prior to putting them into the dishwasher or not. If you do, no need. If you don't and big things are going down the drain that might get stuck, yes.

20 year warranty on the 1 hp model
Do they make you send it back to be inspected before they send you out a new one? Most warranties suck

I grew up without a dishwasher or a garbage disposal. When I bought my house I removed both and I've saved a lot of money.

I have 1 hp, installed 1.5 years ago, no issues so far. It does what it is suppose to do. No drainage issues.

That makes no sense. Why would you remove them?

I had the L-8000. A chunk of metal flew out of it, part of the grinder broke off. I called and was helped immediately. They sent me a new one and had a local plumber install it free of charge.
Fantastic customer service. The new one works great. It is a beast.

Lol seriously. Just don't use it if you don't want to.

I currently have no disposal but will be adding one as part of a kitchen remodel. I don't feel like I need one - so maybe the 1/2hp is fine?

I bought the 1.25hp from Costco for $80 - but maybe that's way more power than I need and I should save the $30?

Have had the 1 hp unit for 6 years with no issues. Just had to replace the rubber boot once. Highly recommend you get the 1hp because it will eat up whatever you put in it.
