This is a solid server that doubles as a workstation. We have multiple of these at work - has TPM for Bitlocker encryption, and can be remote managed with Intel AMT. And it is super quiet, and has decent performance. Runs Windows 10 Pro, FreeNAS, VMWare like a champ. The built in graphics are good enough for office use, we upgraded to 16GB RAM and SSD. Can support 2 (possibly 3) 1080p monitors. All good as a Office PC.

But the CPU is from 2016 (with a passmark of under 8000); you can easily buy computers that are twice as fast for not much more! Heck, many of the sub-$500 laptops now have a passmark of 8000, and probably better graphics.

I would still buy it as a value Workstation or server.

The validated (by Dell) OS's are:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows Server 2012
Windows Server 2012 R2
Windows Server 2016

Others may work fine. ESXI MAY need additional hardware, like a supported NIC, and storage controller...

Usually server 2012 or 2019, but even Windows 10 x64 can utilize the majority of the resources available. It is a server after all.

??? Literally anything you want. Pretty much every flavor of Windows, Linux, BSD, or any of the major hypervisors should work fine on these.

Yes, should be fine. I've got Win10 running on a variety of older PE servers without issue. These days, what separates a low-end server like this from an i7 desktop is virtually nil.

Lower end servers are basically PC's as thesameguy said. You should be fine. Desktop OSs aren't typically certified on server hardware, but they work fine.. Windows server code isn't that far off from Windows desktop versions. 2016=Win10, Server 2008 = Win7... ESXI likes enterprise grade hardware.

Bought one even though I don't need it for my lab. Good to have an extra entry level server for anything.
