Having used many receivers over the years, particularly from Sony Yamaha and Onkyo, your Onkyo experience sounds exactly right. They have great features and sound for the money, but tend to run hot and last a year or two before starting to break down. I got a cheap Yamaha as a temporary replacement after my Onkyo became too unstable to use and was so impressed by it that I ended up getting a higher end Aventage model that's been going strong for over 4 years, running cool and reliably in a media closet for many hours a day. That cheap temporary Yamaha ended up reselling for almost what I paid, and I'm sure is still in use. The Onkyo I threw in a dumpster, which is a shame considering how excited I was for the features when I bought it, but... I understand your frustration.

Whatever you want to do, don't buy SquareTrade warranty. They were great but after All State took over, things have turned upside down. Recently my warranty was rejected although it was valid and the terms were clear that the warranty would start from the date the manuf. ended. They rejected it saying the warranty actually started from the date of purchase and has ended long ago. I took the case to BBB and was about to complain to the AG Office for malpractice. However they sent me an email saying they would make an exception (my @$$) and would honor the warranty for 1 time. That, I had to spend several hour for talking to them and for prepping the docs and for filing my complaint. Not worth it but I had to do to protect my right.

Looks like this has been steadily dropping from $350 for thr last 6 months now. With BF around the corner, I'm gonna roll the dice and see how close to $200 it can get, see if something comparable goes as slick/slicker

After reading extensive reviews I bit on this. Costco has same model on sale "new" of course for $400 right now.
Squaretrade can be purchased on this unit through Woot for $44 for an additional 1 yr warranty.
Never purchased something "reconditioned" from Woot so I am hoping for the best but got Squaretrade just in case.

Have this receiver from a Rakuten deal and it's worked flawlessly.

What's the failure rate on these? Haven't looked into it much, but I have an Onkyo that is constantly problematic and I'd like to smash into bits.

If this has Atmos, why is it only 7.2 and doesn't list the spatial channels (e.g., 7.2.x)?

If Musiccast speakers came down to an equitable margin; I'd be all over this.
