You can get more bang for your buck by using the Ting referral bonus - $25 in credit for a referral to both referrer and new user.
Get a ting referral code and set up an account using a spare email id. You'll see the $25 credit for referral reflected.
Next - activate your new sim. You will need to provide a credit card; prepaid Visa gift cards will work. It won't get charged until the credit runs out, but needs to be provided for the account to be activated.
After you activate your sim, you'll see another $30 in credit (from the sim card) in your account.

At that stage, your account credit will be $55.

Your monthly bill will be based on usage - see https://ting.com/rates to estimate. Note that there is a "line charge" of $6 per month plus taxes and fees; around $7 to $8 per month with "zero usage", higher if you do use minutes / text / data.

With $55 in credit, at zero usage you can keep the number for around 7 months.

If you can refer another user - the first referral gives you $50 in credits, subsequent referrals gives you $25 per referral.

Your prepaid Visa gift card will start getting charged only after you run out of credit - but if you transfer out before the credits are used up, no other charges.

A few things to remember. Credit card is required to activate this sim, and the credit only applies to new accounts, so you can't buy a bunch and stack them.

I got two for no reason except to get 90% off.

Ting is an MVNO with both TMobile and Sprint networks.

Yes, Ting uses T-Mobile exclusively for their GSM service.

Pardon my ignorance, but can someone tell me what the benefit of this would be? Serious question.
