Amazon has the Marineland Aquarium Powerhead 145GPH for $10.02 shipped with subscribe and save. The 300GPH is $13.75 shipped with 5% subscribe and save discount.

What is it that people do with these that you need a subscription for a continual supply over time?

Get the JBJ brand. I own both and they look similar but JBJ is more stable than this in the long run. I found the marineland to vibrate more than it should.

I don't think any one extends the subscription beyond the first delivery with the idea being just to get the discount.

This really depends on what you keep and how you set up your aquascape but, generally with most commonly kept fish, probably not.

Back in the day the used to be primarily be used to run under gravel filters. These days they can be used with a sponge attachment to increase flow in the tank with the added bonus if bio filtration produced by water flow through the sponge.
