Is this the time of year when they only get like 3 hours of daylight and it's skin-shattering cold?

I was there about 3 months ago. Sunrise was at 0200. I actually booked as a stop to Milan. It was cheap for a last minute booking. Then I learned that I had an overnight in Reykjavik and thought, "cool," so I booked a "Bed & Breakfast."

Long story short. It was a nightmare!! The B&B was actually an old military barracks. They said it was renovated, but it turned out that was the paint job in front of the barracks that said, Bed & Breakfast."

I have never been to a place where the people are less versed in the hospitality industry! I will NEVER make that mistake again. BE WARNED....

The place was ran by east Europeans or Russians...they pull scams with rental cars in Reykjavik as well...once you go away from reikiavik everything is fine...very expensive tho...$20 burger and if you want fries another $10
$2 an egg....yup $25 per dozen

$200 if you wanna book a tent or $350 a shitty room with common toilet in Has
Everyone speaks english...have no idea how Icelandic sounds after 2 weeks spent there .nice country but the most expensive...more expensive than bora boara or Macao or Singapore

this is the most YMMV travel comment I've ever seen on SD. you can find similar rackets in literally any tourist destination in the world. Reykjavik, and the rest of Iceland, was one of the most hospitable places I've ever visited. consider doing your due diligence next time and you might have a more rewarding experience.

I did say that it was a stop on my way to Milan. I didn't plan to be there and that was my experience. That said, I don't want to travel to a place where I have to find the places where I won't be miserable for a night! I spent $145 for 1 night and they didn't even have coffee for me in the morning! OH!! Forget about creamer. "No creamer in Ice land!"

Glad you loved it.
Thx for the lols

Iceland started getting "hot" 25 years ago and I jumped at a fare just like this in 1999. Spent 10 days staying with friends, but doubt I'd go back.

In hindsight, unless you are a mega-geology nerd or ultra-outdoorsy, just go to maritime Canada and pretend people talk funny. Er, funnier.

That's the tl/dr version.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great place, but far from the cultural experience you'll get on mainland Europe. And just so desolate...deforested over 1,000 years ago and never recovered. Imagine if we had hardcore environmentalists back then Wink

"Gudrun, please, we can't burn these trees, we must think of American tourists hundreds of years from now."

"Sod off, Petur, I'm cold NOW. Plus the views are better with no trees."
