I'm sure it's simple but why would I need a whole house humidifier? Is it for individual preference, regional or seasonal usage?

Cause a couple years ago I bought a whole house DEHUMIDIFIER. So I'm not understanding the need for a whole house humidifier.

It's because there are these things called seasons. You wouldn't need this in Florida, but in the north it is very dry in the winter causing many problems; even wood floors change dramatically in the dry months.

During winter up here in the north the dry heating air makes your nostrils bleed sometimes. There's no need for dehumidifier though since AC takes care of that during summer, so yes it's mostly a regional necessity. There's also UV lamp option to get rid of some bacteria in the air instead of relying on filter to do so (they make them for water as well which comes in handy with well water supply).

could also have cupping of hardwood floors or other house materials with large swings in humidity. the manufacturer recommends RH of ~42%. without a humidifier it's like 25% or less in my house.

What's the difference between manual vs automatic? Which one? Why?

Thank you very much.

Get the manual one if you have a smart thermostat and have the thermostat control it for you.

I had one of these but it kept clogging (water line) after 5 years or so. Got it fixed for over $150 but it clogged again after a year.

I liked it when it worked but now I use a large free standing humidifier.

automatic one has a probe that runs outside to check the relative humidity and then correspondingly adjusts the output

So a humidity sensing thermostat can turn the humidifier on and off?

Which large free standing humidifier do you use if I may ask?

I have an old Bionaire W6 home humidifier that I found for $10 at a garage sale. It works pretty well.

But there are other good ones such as the Aircare MA0800 or MA1201. I don't have those but I hear good things about them on this site.
