Saw the other deal listed on SD for the 5 GB plan at a discount, and looked at redpocket store on eBay; the 100 min / 100 text / 500 MB LTE plan which was normally at $60 is now at $54.

For iPhone on Red Pocket GSMA, MMS (picture/group texting with non-iPhones) won't work.

100 texts? what are people doing, moving to messenger type apps to communicate? how do you get by on 100 texts?

Probably for elderly people. Don't like it, but nice to have if you need it.

Backup / emergency / glovebox phone on a different telco (Verizon / AT&T) for the times you don't have signal.

GV or other VOIP based phone usage; especially if mostly in Wifi environments, with minimal data use

Starter line for children.

Parking a phone number for a year because you're travelling overseas.

Pop it in a tablet esp if your data use is low to zero.

Or use Whatsapp / Facebook Messenger / iMessage / Signal etc.. on Wifi, with very few minutes and texts used (older folks..)

This is a perfect plan for us. We use it on a family phone (for our kids). We don't have a land line anymore & for less than $5/month, it works great. Nice to have communication with kids at home, when we are not.

Whatsapp. You can do text, group text, share videos & pictures, voice & video call all for free as long as you have data or Wi-Fi AND as long as the other person also has the same app installed on their phone!

I don't understand why people use texting. Whatsapp, signal, .etc are so much better.

Heck, I don't even give out my real number anymore. It's not like I'd answer it anyway - nothing but spam. GVoice pretty much covers me and has pretty decent spam filtering. Since I don't call international, I never pay a penny (well, I pay with my life...but not my cash).

We've been using Red Pocket for my pre-teen and teen for a year and are very happy with it.
Why?

-You choose which network you want to be on, they send you the correct SIM card, you stick it in your unlocked phone, and you are up.
-Given that many people do not need the Unlimited Everything offerings sold in the major carrier stores for $$$, the RedPocket plans are a good value for what you get. Plans start at less than $5 a month and have increments every $5 to $10 more. You can adjust month to month without difficulty. We have yet to be hit with any secret charges, come-on pricing that goes up later, or anything like that. We will probably stay with Red Pocket until our kids are up beyond the needs of the $30/month plan, but only because someone else is paying our family plan bill!
-The website is efficient. Checking my balance or making a change is easy. Automatic refills work flawlessly and always come with an e-mail reminding me that my account was debited. In comparison, visiting the V****** is worse than going to a used car lot. We also tried H2O mobile and found their site to be unusably bad.
-Someone else was right to point out, that while the number of texts is low in this plan, the "kids these days" are largely moving away from texts to group messaging apps. And if the $5 a month plan is too low, we found the $10 and $15 to be appropriate for the light daily user.
-No, I'm not a Red Pocket shill, just a longtime Slick Deals user who actually has experience with the product being discussed (which is sometimes a rarity on the Slick Deals forums).
