They put them in the movie because the island they filmed on had a bunch of puffins they couldn't get out of frame.

I unlove it because I just didn't like the movie with the Porgs in it.

On the other hand, if they'd ever made ANYTHING with Lothcat's in it... I'd be throwing my money at them.

LEGO Star Wars Ideas Book has a Loth-Cat build.

The theory is they put this in the movie to sell merchandise as kid would think it is cute. It's a symbol of what Star Wars has become- a marketing ploy to sell merch. people hate this set!!
It's an absolutely wrong theory though.

Same tune, different lyrics thirty-six years later.

I liked (did not love) The Last Jedi and I like Porgs, but I won't be buying this set. There are cute Legos -- this one is not one of them. It's practically nightmare fuel.

They are 2017 Ewoks. Stop blaming Disney for everything.

Thanks OP. I got this from Amazon back on 9/28 for $45 so I was able to chat with Amazon to get a $10 credit without having to return.

This is actually false. Not that I nor anyone else knows their mindset creating the movie, but it would, in fact, not be easier to create and CGI a bunch of animals than to mask out actual animals they didn't want in frame. They put them in because they liked and/or were inspired by the puffins.

From a VFX artist: [twitter.com] My point is that adding Porgs was a conscious choice rather than a bandaid to fix the Puffin problem, as the article and quotes imply. I'm sure the puffins aided in inspiration for Porgs, but it's false to assume they HAD to because they couldn't deal with the puffins on set.
