How well do these pair with a Bottlehead Crack amp? I know it's designed for high impedance headphones but I've gotta ask, since I've seen people pair low impedance headphones with a darkvoice.

The headphones may sound good, but their build quality is lacking and some users complained that the headband broke off after 2 years of use, when the warranty expires. Plus, there is no easy way to get them repaired. I would pass even though they seem to be a good deal...

Coming from the Audio Technica M40X, these are the best headphones that I have ever tried within the price range. I initially bought the Senheisher 6XX but could not stand their lack of enthusiasm for music. I paid $450 for the Fostex and the sound quality is worth it. The negative side is the building quality which is so lacking that sometimes I wonder if the excellent sound quality is worth the hassle of babying these headphones. I actually dreamed once that my Fostex were broken. For $350 is less of an issue, perhaps.

Not good with a Crack I'm afraid. They are quite nice with the Bottlehead Mainline though and better still with a Wire se-se. Sorry to hear some folks have had durability issues with them. I haven't encountered that, but I baby my phones and keep them on a stand.

My pair came from the first run, and fwiw, I listen to them regularly when I want closed cups or more bass than my hd800s put out. Nice phones imo and a good deal. They aren't ultra HiFi but have a good FR curve and pair well with any half decent low impedance amp.

I have the Mahogany ( this one ) and the Ebony ( both the older, fixed cable TH-X00 versions ) and haven't had any issues with build quality. The Ebony is probably my favorite headphone. Also have an HD598, HD600, HD650, DT 1990 Pro and a Focal Elear. These don't have quite the instrument separation and resolution of some of my other headphones but they make up for it in fun factor. I liken them to strapping a nightclub to your ears. Smooth velvety mids, huge bass that doesn't bleed into other frequencies and highs that are just perfect.

The Ebony is more neutral and works with more music but for Rock, Metal, EDM, Electronica, Hip-Hop or Rap the Mahogany is a great headphone. Don't buy it for classical or lite rock/folk but if you're looking for some fun cans these fit the bill quite nicely.

Do you have one? If not, just shut up. I have been using it for about 3 years and love it, especially if when used with Fostex TX 900 earpad https://www.fullcompass.com/prod/...900-single

I bought the Purpleheart as TH-X00 back in 2016. Headband is not great for those who experience fatigue at the apex of the scalp like I do. I was able to use the ZMF Pilot Pad (Lambskin) which greatly improved comfort for long listening sessions. Before that, I could use it maybe 1-2 hours before irritation really settles in.

As for build concerns—don't toss these around. Treat them with respect because they aren't built like tanks. I've had mine 3 years now without issues. The Purpleheart version is definitely one of my favorite sound signatures in a headphone. Great for those who like a V-shape with emphasis on bass and pristine mids without being shrill on the treble. I don't experience listener's fatigue on that model. Can't speak for the others, unfortunately.

Not particularly well, neither would the darkvoice though..It would be better then the BHC though. The output imedance of the bottlehead is just too high for these. They sound great from SS amps though.

I wish Beats came out with a pair of ultra-fi that wiped the floor with meze and focal and every time you were to shit on beats you'd have to stop yourself and go g'dammit

A little off topic, but has anyone tried the new SMSL SP200 THX amp? Looks like a nice setup. The THX series amps should be able to handle any headphone.
