As another option, if you don't mind going the refurbished route, the same lense is available on Canon's lense refurb website for $439, with the same 1 year Canon warranty.

hmm, that's a pretty good deal too. Cheaper than buying from KEH or MPB right now.

Well, yes, EF-S lenses are specifically designed for Canon APS-C (crop) sensors.

Great price. Good lens. It's notorious for acquiring dust in the lens for some reason.

its not sealed like an L series. I've always felt this lense shoots as well as an L, and have wished they would come out with an L like version of it with a better body build and better seals.

I have not been following prices on lenses in quite a few years. How much lower in price is this lens right now that what it typically has been selling for? As old is this lens is, are they finally going to replace it?

According to CamelCamelCamel, this lens fluctuates monthly between $549 and $829 on Amazon.

Unfortunately, Slick Deals will not allow me to post a direct link to CamelCamelCamel. Just search for: B000EW8074

I have watched this lens for a long time. Until 2019, there were very few deals on this. There year it has been just under $500 briefly. My reluctance has been the large premium relative to the almost as good Tamron and Sigma. Otoh, I really dislike the loud AF on my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and want the manual focus over ride the Canon has.
3 camels shows this is a very good price historically.

Yeah I had the Tamron 17-50 years ago and I didn't like it. I had used it on a friends Nikon and liked it for the price, so I bought one for my Canon and the AF was horrible and it made everything look red. I got rid of it and got a 24-105 but I've not had something to really replace it since then. Years back I didn't spring for the CaNon 17-55 because of the lack of seals and build quality for the price... I have used it before, and it produces images much clearer than the Tamron and it sounds crazy but I think the color looks better as well.

This is the first ''serious'' lens I got when I was into photography, it's like a deacde ago? Back then used were going for 650 to 700. Also surprised it hasn't been refreshed yet but I guess it's still good for today's camera.
But I'd be more tempted to get the Sigma 18-35 with a small 50 prime for portrait. FYI it's been $529 before. Even at 639 now it's helluve value for what it is.

This is a lovely lens. I paired it with a 70-200 Sigma Sport for a wedding recently and it held up great.

This is a pretty good price for new, but this lens has been around for a long time and there are a ton of used lenses out there for 200-400. At 200 you'll probably get some tiny dust specs, but it takes a lot of that kind of dust to affect image quality.
