At this level.. there are no crappy cameras.. There are only crappy photographers...

I have both the EOS R and the A7III. The EOS R has sat on my shelf. I took it out for a shoot last weekend and was still disappointed. I bought it as a backup camera in case my a7iii went down. They aren't bad cameras, per se, but they don't hold a candle to the Sony's. Autofocus, low light performance, battery life, etc...Sony beats it in just about every category.

As someone who has used these I'll just give some quick input for people deciding:

A7III can't be beat in terms of autofocus, noise, and 4k video. Ergonomically I agree with the other users who have mentioned that this is the worst. I find it uncomfortable to use without a battery grip, it's just too small unless you have small hands, your pinky will always hang off and it's awkward to grip.

Canon's latest firmware update has brought the AF very close to Sony's level, it's only ever so slightly behind, their AF works great. Best ergonomics, it's a bigger camera and weighs only a little more than the A7III. Your hand feels very comfortable and the quality build is there. Superb quality out of the 1080p video, almost better than downsampled 4k from the Sony, almost..

Nikon is like the middle kid who does things okay but not great. It's autofocus is in third now after Canon's update, it's 4k video is better than Canon, but Canon takes 1080p video that is much better than both the A7III and Z cameras. It's ergonomics are much better than Sony, but a little less appealing than the EOS R.

Again some of the above can be considered opinion, but a lot of this has been reviewed at length by many.

Just shoot with what works for you in the end though. 1k for a mirrorless camera and a leg in to start building some glass for an IBIS model R might be too good to pass up Smilie

Is it as good as Sony a7iii? That is the benchmark with mirrorless full frame should be compared.

Check out cameralabs, RP is not even close to a6400 (APSC) comparing it to A7iii is pointless. But it does take good pictures of non moving subjectsSmilie

With 1.6k I would go with EOS R instead of RP Stick Out Tongue

No camera salesman I have every talked to has had anything positive to say about this camera. I personally haven't used it but take that for what it's worth.

It's worth noting that it is not the same camera now as it was upon release. Compared to its release, it has some much better features due to firmware updates. Canon has issued/announced a few key updates since its release -- most notably, to improve its auto focus (with really improved "eye AF") and the addition of 24p video mode.

Sources:

24p: https://petapixel.com/2019/10/09/...ra-models/
Auto focus: https://petapixel.com/2019/09/26/...-r-and-rp/

I plan on buying it in a few seconds but I would not without those updates because upon release it was generally unimpressive except for its price. Smilie
