I'm positive the majority of those Costco reviews I read are fake. Anyone have a opinion on how this compares to the original sonicare essence?

Are you really that lazy that you have to pay to get your teeth brushed by electricity ??? Face it … this deal will cost more than $70 in the long run …..
The electric toothbrush gives a much better clean, better for gums too. So... it's not about being lazy, and cost of good teeth longterm is worth it

Since there are chips in the handle and the brush , are there any aftermarket brush heads for this ?

What's the best toothbrush where you can buy cheap brush heads. Sure someone out there got this one figured out

My dentist says for most people electric works better than manual. Just the two minute timer and quadpacer features alone are worthwhile for me. When using manual, studies show most people do not brush the full 2 minutes as recommended. That said I bought this model during the last sale. I can recommend it. It's their entry level but I've realized personally, it's all I need. I had a fancier model before this but honestly never used the extra modes or settings other than the regular clean mode. You can still use the old non-chip or aftermarket brush heads. If you have a chip it's just supposed to set the cleaning mode automatically based on the head and remind you to replace it after 3 months. Without the chip it just works like it always did. The main improvement I really like is actually in the design of the metal connector to the brush head. Before in the 2/3/4 series there is a gap on the connector which will get moldy and gross over time. Now the gap is gone and it's much easier to keep clean. If you have an older model like I did and you compare it with this one, you'll see what I mean. As far as heads go I think oral b heads might be a bit cheaper if you stick with the original brands. However if you go with aftermarket/no brand heads you can find both ecosystems for cheap. There are endless debates online about which one is better, sonicare vs oral b, so at the end it's just which one you prefer.

Does anyone know how this compares to the series 2. Picked one up 3 years ago and it's trucking along fine, was curious if this was an upgrade in any way

Which ones do you buy? Most have bad reviews.

I got both of these for $6 after coupon within the past year and thought they were fine for the price:
