PSA-YMMV- target issues a target gift card instead of Paypal refund

I recently purchased an item from Target for in store pickup.

After missing the window for pickup they states they were refunding me via a target giftcard instead of my paypal. I have a feeling this may be due to the paypal refund policy. This is clearly not what is listed on the Target website.

I think I am going to quit using paypal and possibly Target for that matter. It is just not worth it for this hassle IMO.

A lot of stores will issue refunds in the form of store credit/gift card instead of Paypal refund. This is why I try not to use Paypal unless I know for sure I won't be returning something. Unfortunate Frown

Same thing happened with me at Autozone, I thought it was Autozone's fault but looks like Paypal is responsible

I'm surprised this is now being known to the public. It's been this way for almost 3 years, I think. It sucks

This happened to me as well last Black Friday. I fought hard and I eventually got a check refund due to California rules. Took me 2 weeks of phone calls then asking to speak to legal department for target. After all said and done it was a hard earned refund for 150.xx
Lesson learned
Don't use PayPal they didn't help one bit with the dispute,
Target in the end did the right thing.

I don't think this is due to the new policy. PayPal now keeps the original transaction fees in the case of a refund, but it doesn't cost Target anything extra to send one.

Target is paying the same amount if they give you a GC or a PayPal refund, I don't see any reason why they would do this other than simply to keep your cash.
Yes, that's right, since they've already paid the transaction fees due to Paypal's new policy, they need to keep your money in their system by issuing you a gift card instead of a refund. If they issue you a refund, in the past they would have gotten their transaction fees back, but now they will not get them back. SO they want to keep your money in their system . Makes sense to me. It's absolutely due to Paypal's ridiculous policy of keeping the transaction fees in the event of refunds.

Still sucks. I've stopped using paypal as a seller, and I'll probably try not to use it as a buyer too, because using a credit card (or target redcard) is just as easy in most cases.

Of course its because of the new policy. If Paypal isn't going to REFUND 100% then Target has to eat the fee either way, that is true, but if you get your money back their is no guarantee you will shop at Target again, with the GC you are locked of course and Target will gladly eat the transaction cost to insure you spend your money there.
Best just to avoid using paypal.
