It's also a volume measurement...
If you are wondering about fitting textbooks and other things in there it seems to have plenty of room in the 2 big pockets. I compared it to the classic JanSport backpack, which is 16" h x 13" w . This Samsonite bag is 19" h x 13" w so you should have plenty of room for larger books and things.... assuming that's what you're talking about.

Bought one for international travel. Not worried about being too big as I will use it in place of my carry on. Does anyone know what Samsonites warranty policy is?

Thanks for the reply, I jumped through the same hoops and came to the same conclusion. Law school has been rough on my Swiss Gear, I think this will be a great replacement.
Can you sue Swiss Gear?

Check out eBags! I bought one off of SD a few years ago and it has treated me well. Build quality is great.

Which one? The samsonite or the Swiss? I'm in grad school and my bag keeps falling apart.

Doesn't appear to be water proof. Deal breaker for me as a commuter.

If you are on the fence, Best Buy carries these. I went in to check it out in person and was woefully unimpressed. I didn't think it was worth $40 much less $130.
I am with you on the quality. The stitching looks frayed at the ends which will need to be trimmed and the bag just has a "cheapish" feel to it. I know what you are talking about when you said you were unimpressed. With that said, I still liked it and got it for $40 and here are some reasons. I got it because of its cheapish feel. It feeling a bit more cheapish makes it less "stiff" if you know what I mean. It would be easier to stow into airline baggage cubby. The zippers etc. are very good. I hope the material itself is good and if it does rip I know Samsonite will have me covered for 3 years. Is it MSRP $130, hell to the no. Is it a decent backpack for $40, only time will tell. Can better ones be had at this price, yes but I dont know what other great options are out there for something comparable for $40.

Just received mine and it is going right back. The zipper handles get twisted up and very annoying to get them straight every time you need to open the bag or close it. The laptop compartment in the back fits a 15 inch laptop but you will feel the laptop in your back because it doesn't have enough padding. I would also hate to throw the bag on the floor if your laptop is in it, The padding at the bottom won't protect it enough from damage. Very light quality and honestly, my kids $20 backpacks are better built and much better quality. I think it is worth $40.00 at regular price because of the name and to make it a Slick Deal it would have to be priced below $15.00. Stay away from it at this price. Don't be fooled by all the compartments, they are small.
