If i don't have the year subscription, after the free trial is up i don't care about recording. if someone rings my bell will it pop up on my phone and I can view live and talk to them?

I would definitely get this if it came with the 1 year top tier Monitoring service like Costco has. That's $100;value and works with all your Ring Monitoring products. I may just buy another Ring 2 for the extra battery and get the 1 year service ( since I will neeed to renew anyways for my home security) and have a extra Doorbell for somewhere else.

You got some good replies to this already but I just wanted to reiterate! If you currently have a doorbell and a mechanical chime, you definitely have a transformer. It's possible the transformer is located in the wall behind the mechanical chime, but it totally depends on the construction of your house. Mine was literally just mounted to the ceiling in the basement near the junction box it was attached to.

If you were to just try the install without messing with the transformer, it'll probably work at first, but you are at high risk of running into problems in the coming days/weeks if it's underpowered. Hope this helps!
I installed the August doorbell without any existing wiring, wasn't too bad. 16vdc 30va doorbell transformer ran about $13, drilled a tiny hole to fit the two wires through, easily patched when I move apartments. Hid the wiring by running it to the closest outlet with fish tape, a must if you're trying to get wires through insulation in tough to reach places you can't see. Converted that outlet to a designated storage box for holding the transformer, covered up by a blank plate, which is just like any other outlet plate, only solid so no holes for switches or plugs.

A sincere question. A have both skybell HD and the Ring. I have trouble justifying using the Ring when Skybell works perfect and has no subscription fee. What does Ring offer?

Literally nothing at this time. From all the reviews I've read, Skybell has better video quality and you will save $120 a year in sub fees with Skybell. The benefit of Ring and Nest are video cam integration. Actually it's more Ring than Nest. I would wait for next gen releases if both are still working well for you.

I am wondering the same. I just saw Costco has the pro for $179 with the year of plus, so May be interested in keeping the show if it's cheap enough with returning the rest to best buy.

Original item price for that will be charged and adjusted in the bill.

Yes, I did get and installed LaView. The packaging and content is very similar to Ring, I would not be surprised If they came out from the same factory.

Advantage Ring:
1. Support is far better than LaView. LaView's support is close to none existent. But good support could not overcome design falws.
2. When it is on sale like this one or Costco's includes 12 months monitor fees, Ring is far cheaper than LaView. I got the LaView on Amazon Lightning deal and it still cost just below $120.
3. Ring has better color image. LaView is very washout.

Advantage LaView:
1. Less demanding on transformer with min 8V. Many older house's transformers' are less than 16V required by Ring.
2. Wider field of view. LaView claimed 180 deg vertical view. The result while a bit fish eye like, it does have much wider view, this helps especially my exiting doorbell hole is lower than the recommend 4ft.
3. LaView has local SD storage and cloud option. Also been ONVIF compatible (need firmware update, they shipped with more than 1 year old firmware), you can use other compatible apps like TinyCam to view or use NVR to record 24/7. Local access is also much quicker to get the live view on than going through cloud.
4. Being ONVIF compatible means LaView can be viewed with local WIFI only. Does not depends on internet availability.

To me, the last two points are very important and I am still deciding to return the Ring or install it at back door as backup. To those do not care about those two points, Ring probably is better choice If they also have transform 16V or higher, otherwise Ring Doobell 2 is better

BTW, I recommend to measure the exiting voltage level first. One can just measure the voltage across the exiting doorbell button without wasting time to find the transformer.
Really? I had the laview 1 for over a year and really thinking of switching to ring because the enormous amount of lag and the glare at night. When ever someone rings the door and iget the alert and go check the person is already driving away, the motion detection is not consistent.

That's what I figured, but worth asking. If I keep the Costco version, then better to sell or just return everything to Best Buy.
