I have this razor. Works great, however:

Replacement foil + blade is $50

There is a newer model (the one with the gold rollers). It is more expensive, but worth it, because:

This razor is notorious for razor burn on sensitive faces. It is an extremely close and aggressive shave, putting any amount of pressure on the head while shaving can cause breakouts. It gets incredibly hot after 2 minutes of sustained use (10000rpm does that) which worsens irritation.

I only needed to replace the foil and blades once, but the foil separately a 2nd time, (1.5 year ownership) because the foil is so incredibly thin that I somehow dented it without ever dropping it, and this led to improper distribution of force across the foil head.

The newer version uses the gold rollers between the foil crevices to prevent skin from getting trapped and pinching/tearing skin.

This razor also needs to be meticulously cleaned, there is a cleaning station, however I reccomend cleaning after each use thoroughly to prevent issues. The trimmer head that pops out gets more use from me personally at the current moment.

Amazon [amazon.com] has the Panasonic Arc5 Electric Razor, Men's 5-Blade Cordless with Shave Sensor Technology and Wet/Dry Convenience, ES-LV65-S for $99.99 with Free Shipping.

This is a highly rated shaver and $99.99 is the lowest historical price from Amazon.

One amazon review said the battery is only good for three years and the unit won't work when plugged in. It was quoted from the user manual. Can anyone verify this?

I've owned several Panasonic models, latest is the Arc4 ES-LA63. None of them have been able to be used while plugged in, this is due to being a wet-dry shaver and not having it plugged in and using it in the shower/sink. Batteries last longer than 3 years, but they lose charge a lot quicker.

Currently have an arc 3 which I bought 6 years ago. Not too happy with the shave, particularly around the neck area. I went back to razor shaving. Is this a big step up from the arc 3?

Better than the Braun, you say? Interesting.

I've had my Braun 9 series for a few years now and it seems like its performance has been degrading over time. Over the first year I owned it, it did a pretty good job. But now I find myself going over the same areas multiple times, and there are a couple of spots where it won't shave closely no matter how many passes I make. When I first began noticing the crappier performance, I changed the head - and that didn't help at all. Very odd.

So, I'm considering this Panasonic. I've only ever owned Norelcos and Brauns. Maybe it's time to try something new. Anyone know how this Arc5 compares to the rest of Panasonic's pantheon of electric shavers? Is it worth spending more for the fancier ones (i.e. LV95)?
