my 4tb wd portable drive always fails, and clicking noise .
shall I buy 2 of this to save my precious photos for many years? I regularly and sometimes attached it to the NAS.
wd portable drives are getting worse, I just talked with another person in another thread about my experience losing 2 portables within 5 years.
Always backup your documents and stuff in two drives. Considering the drive prices are not that expensive, they are worth the extra cash you paid.

Not totally comparable, but if you have 2 bays available and a Microcenter nearby they have their 1TB Inland SATA SSD for only $80 right now, so $160 for 2. So if you're feeling risky, grab 2 and Raid 0 them!

Also uses 3D TLC NAND like the SanDisk Ultra

How does this one compare to the 860 QVO 2tb, in terms of speed, durability, etc?

from my experience, ssds have been more reliable in the long run compared to my hdds. their lifespan are often tied to a TBW (amount of written data) so unless you do lots of writes over it, they will remain fine for a long time. however, running it in a NAS, ymmv depending on whether you have it running in RAID.
One slight downside to SSDs is that they have to be powered up every once in a while or they will lose the data.

Your previous photos need to be backed up to cloud and mirrored NAS drives if you don't want any possibility of losing them.

depends. I had my samsung 830 eco unpowered for 4 years and it still had all its data fine. I know eventually it will corrupt, but if you stick with the name brand it should be a lot better.

Is this a better drive than a Samsung 860 QVO and/or Intel 660p?
Not really better. Problem with SanDisk are variable parts, so you never know what you are getting. SanDisk reserves the right to change suppliers.
Might be better than 860 QVO or might be worse.
Definitely worse than 660p.
Best budget NVME deal right now is SX8100 for $200

Is it worth upgrading to an NVME via a PCI-e adaptor? I have an older board and do not have a native slot

SSD will lose data if not powered on for extended time. How quickly varies.

No, while it is possible to do, it's too much trouble to bother. Compatibility issues, extra drivers and might not be bootable.

Go with SATA drive. It's difficult to decide between SanDisk and 860 QVO at same price. I would go for cheaper option.
Avoid A-Data SU800, 7xx or 650 series (there is so many of them).
860 Evo and MX500 are best SATA drives, but cost more.
