Thinking about buying an Xbox one for a 4K Blu-ray and occasional games. Is there any advantage of using a dedicated player such as this?

what's the advantage (if any) of an actual 4k Blu-ray player than, say, an Xbox or Playstation?
Can you play 4K discs on PlayStation?

I'm not sure there's a better affordable 4k blu-ray player. I've had mine for about a year and it's been great. Menu system is ugly, but works. DolbyVision switch is not automatic and I'm not aware of any player that is. Maybe a much more expensive one?

That said, my first one was problematic with frequent HDMI dropouts. Returned for another one and it's been great. Would recommend you get one and test it thoroughly in case you also have issues.
Every other 4k bluray player that supports Dolby vision switches automatically other than sonys

The Xbox One doesn't support Dolby Vision for 4K Blu-Rays so for me with a dolby vision tv it stinks to use my Xbox One for them.

I wonder how good a job this might do with 4k blu-ray full disc rips(not MKV as it doesn't support dolby vision, but all the files from the disc on a hard drive)? My lg tv itself doesn't find the right audio track for every rmovie, and the 4k lg blu-ray player I tried did a worse job.

What do you mean by the Dolby Vision switch isn't automatic? It doesn't recognize the tv supports Dolby Vision and I set that and I'm done, or every movie that supports Dolby Vision I'd have to try to turn that setting on?

Have you tried playing any full disc copies on a USB drive with the player? My TV, as well as an LG 4k Blu-Ray player I tried couldn't always find the right audio track, and manually selecting it I couldn't find it in the list of audio tracks, the closest english tracks I could find were the audio description tracks in those cases. It would be nice to find a player that fully supported them in a folder structure matching the disc including the menus and such.

unless they do an update, Xbox nor Playstation can't do 4k HDR. Unless if they already did an update Confused

I have done very extensive work in last few day, specially on this model. This might be helpful to you and all others who are debating between dedicated Bluray vs Xbox one S /X For bluray.

1. Picture quality will be almost same from all 3 devices. Sony UBP-X700, Xbox one S and X
2. User Experience best from Sony BR player. Its very pleasant experience watching movie, just insert the disc and it will take care remaining. For both Xbox, Bluray /4k option is not by default. You need to install Bluray app, then when you insert disc, need to navigate that app to open / run bluray.
3. Another hassle with Dolby Atmos. You need to install another app in Xbox, not a big deal, still.. Its out of the box for UBP-X700.

4. Best part I like and most people appreciate is dedicated HDMI port for Audio. You don't realize how helpful it's until you use it for the specific purpose. I run all my Atmos movies from BR player to TV and pass the Audio to soundbar as my TV doesn't pass Atmos (I have Samsung 75 inch Q9 Series, it's unfortunate Samsung didn't include that simple feature in this expensive TV).

With both Xbox, to make Atmos work with TV which doesn't pass Atmos, you need to follow this.

XBone HDMI---> Soundbar HDMI1 ---> Soundbar HDMIARC (consider HDMI 4)---> TV HDMIARC = Dolby Atmos works. After searching so many places, I found this is the only way Atmos works with Xbox.

5. Most of the apps including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Vudu supports 4k HDR and Dolby vision and supports Atmos. Doesn't try the apps from Xbox, so not sure about it.

After thinking too much, I finally triggered Sony UBP-X700. Currently enjoying fully. Didn't have regret to buy over Xbox which can just substitute for 4K player, but the experience would be more pleasant with Bluray player.

Xbox One Pro and S DO play 4k blurays. PlayStation doesn't (as corrected myself a few comments above)

Decent player for a good price, had this for about a year and though the menus are not the most user friendly, not gonna find anything better at this price point.

I'm pretty sure the Xbox One S can do HDR, it just can't do Dolby Vision (I really wish it could do Dolby-Vision). I could check later with mine to be sure, but I'm pretty sure my tv says HDR when I start most discs!

Rated #1 on Amazon with a 3.7 rating? Fakespot gives it a C. Anyone have one - looking for some feedback before I pull the trigger.
I own this player and have never had any issue with it. Not sure why it has 20% 1-star reviews on Amazon. Considering buying a second one of these for my other 4K TV.

Make sure your UHD player can handle Dolby Vision. Well-done Dolby Vision-encoded UHDs are breathtaking.

When upgrading your Blu-rays, reading UHD reviews help separate the wheat from the chaff.
