I think having to listen to an audio book might make me die faster from the boredom. Wink
Funny I used to say the same thing. Then I started with all those free trials. Now I absolutely love it. It's great and it opened me up to listening to podcasts years ago as well. Hell this is a great deal imo...

"Masterpieces" and they do not have: Vanna Speaks by Vanna White or any of the Kardashians penned books in which they provide advice.

If these are BOOKS that I must READ....... yet they sell it to LISTEN TO........

Then why wouldn't I just WATCH THEM as MOVIES, instead??

Aren't most of the books listed already in public domain?

I believe you're right, most are in the public domain. Check out the Librivox app, they have free audiobook recordings of pretty much every book in the public domain. You can stream or download the mp3s, you don't even have to go through a library like you do with Libby or Overdrive (which are also great)! This is cheap, but I wouldn't buy this when they're available for free through Librivox or Libby

Libby is wonderful. So is HooplaDigital, as well as cloudLibrary. The only time I use my audible credits is for audible-only. I totally agree with DrRad, get a library card & use it for all the digital services you get for free (well, as a tax payer). If you don't live in a town with a big library, see if the ones in big cities near you allow you to get a card with only being a state resident. If you work in a big city (or for a company with a location in one), then most likely the library will allow you to get a card through work. I know that works for Seattle, Dallas, etc. You can end up with so many digital resources just for audiobooks that you can't possibly make it through all the allowed checkouts in a single month, then it resets to a bunch again next month. Not to mention free services such as freegal, & Lynda.com.
Agreed. My library also has RB digital, which is an app that has nearly the entire collection of audiobooks published by Recorded Books. I've found lots of book on this app that I can't find in Libby or Hoopla, especially those from Great Britian (each app does have it's own contents, and they are library dependent, so it can be worth it to have more than one library card - I do and have been able to get content from one library on one of the apps that isn't available from my other library on the same app). Like Hoopla, RB digital does have books that are always available, though not its entire collection. Some libraries also offer always available audiobooks through Libby, some of which are fairly popular books.

If you don't have a solid library system (and note, a lot of smaller libraries combine into an area, like the south east section of the state, in order to provide patrons greater access to content by pooling resources. Also, in large metro areas, like the DC area, you can get a free out-of-state membership as some libraries provide reciprocal memberships, like the Fairfax County library does for DC residents.), you can purchase a membership to some of the bigger library systems. For some, you have to visit in person and for others, you can purchase them online. Yes, they cost money, but way cheaper than a monthly Audible subscription. For example, the Fairfax County library system is around $25 for the year. Between 2 library cards and 3 different apps, I am almost always able to get an audiobook I want within a reasonable timeframe. The only things I buy on Audible now are the Audible exclusives, and that's still pretty rare.

Do you have a tape deck? Bluetooth tape is a thing that I do in my 2004 ride.

I'm pretty sure you can if you buy through the Amazon interface and not audible.com. Every Audible book has an equivalent Amazon listing.
