It looks like it's a Chinese knockoff of the original KA Model KPRA Italian made Pasta Cutters. Bait and switch-ish?

The cutters are great, but if you want fresh pasta without a ton of work and cleanup, consider getting a dedicated pasta extruder like the Philips Pasta Maker [amazon.com] (or the compact model [amazon.com]). Not only is it stupid-proof and much quicker, but you can make other shapes with it like rigatoni, fusilli, and other squiggly shapes with no issue since it uses dies instead of cutters.

Granted, these cutters have their place, and I know it's fun if kids actually want to roll out the dough and such, but if you simply want fresh pasta as quickly and as easily as possible, get a dedicated pasta maker. It is, 100%, the way to go.

This combo is a fantastic deal..just the 3 rollers at $99 is a deal. Note, there are two versions that I know: KPRA & KSMPRA and from my memory it was this KSMPRA model in my amazon wishlist the one to get and on occasion goes below 130 but never have I seen below 100 so the Fresh Prep Attachment (~$30) makes this a black friday deal I believe.

Any recommendation on a rack? Is the Kitchenaid drying rack worth it?

I have a manual. It works, but from the first time I used it I wished I'd bought this. Waited a couple years for a decent price (missed this last bf), got in this time.
Oh yea? You prefer this over the manual? I would think the manual should be more safer for my kiddos to use and also I would have to lug my kitchenaid in and out to use it.

My counters made mounting difficult for the manual. Hand cranking at a steady speed while feeding and gathering is a difficult skill to master.. much easier with 2 people so maybe good for the kiddos. Safety? I don't see anything unsafe about the kitchenaid version. Weight, personally my giant mixer has its own space on the counter. Looks good and no lugging. Also the KA is raised, makes the output easier to manage verses on the counter. These reasons are my own and may or may not apply to your situation.

Oh, the hand crank version does ravioli too in many versions. Extra point there. I'll keep mine, but next batch of pasta will go through the KA.

Is the bottom line that the KPRA has more metal parts and is better than the KSMPRA that is in this set?

Lots of conflicting info, but it seems to go like this..

The original KPRA was labeled commercial quality, had all metal housing, "metal" rollers and cutters.

Revised KPRA switched to plastic parts (rollers/ cutters/ scraper ) that were prone to breaking.

KPRA was retired for KSMPRA, Rollers/ cutters changed to stainless steel.

Not personal knowledge, just piecing together comments and reviews that supported similar conclusions.

So now the KSMPRA is the best current option with only plastic scrapers? There are some videos at https://www.kpsarepair.com/installation but it's hard to know which generation these are. We really need a junk tax to avoid this nonsense.

So what makes the Kitchenaid brand metal grinder better than the other various metal grinders out there? Some being all stainless steel.
