This laptop is freaking awful. I had one and it would thermal throttle basically immediately even with an undervolt. Many reviews show this thing has the worst thermals of the legion line and dave2d brought up some very good points about a potentially bad hinge design.

do yourself a favor and get the y540 from microcenter for an extra $100.

you'll get the same specs, with wildly better cooling, and a much bigger screen (17.3")

Supposedly out of the 3 legion models available (the Y740, Y540, and Y545) this one has the worst thermals. That being said, I had the 1660 ti version with 512gb ssd and 1tb hdd from costco which I purchased for $1050 and I liked it. I returned it because I wanted an RTX 2060. The thing did get hot, too hot to use in your lap without some protection. I played games like AC odyssey and CS:GO. It was very smooth. The 144hz g sync ips on these things are great but do have some light leak on all black screens.

That's the funny thing I don't play alot of games lol. I'm thinking I should just cancel and get something with 32gb of ram and weaker graphics card. I'm mostly console gamerr, but have dreams of getting back into it. Primary need is VM lab, secondary gaming

I said use. Not play. But yes I have- games like the binding of issac that can be keyboard controlled only. My reason for having a gaming laptop vs a desktop is so I can take it to different rooms in my house, specifically which ever room my daughter is playing in.

I see. Having a gaming laptop that can be carried around is very nice.

Yes. This laptop is designed for gaming. And it's selling point is the fast graphic card and CPU. So if ram is what you need most you can just buy a relative cheap laptop and upgrade ram yourself.
