Trump Fined $2 Million for Charity Abuse

20,042 1,013 November 7, 2019 at 10:11 PM
A New York judge on Thursday ordered President Trump to pay $2 million in damages for misusing funds from a tax-exempt charity — taking the charity's money to pay debts for his for-profit businesses, to boost his 2016 campaign and to buy a painting of himself, according to court documents.

It marked an extraordinary moment: The president of the United States acknowledged in a court filing that he had failed to follow basic laws about how charities should be governed. Previously, Trump had insisted the charity was run properly and the suit was a partisan sham.

As part of the settlement, Trump also agreed to disburse the $1.8 million remaining in the foundation to a set of charities, and to shutter it for good.

If Trump does ever join a charity board — or starts a new charity of his own — the charity must fill a majority of board seats with people who have no relationship to Trump. It also must hire a qualified attorney, submit to audits and agree never to pay Trump or his company for any services.

Philip Hackney, a former IRS lawyer who now teaches charity law at the University of Pittsburgh, said that was a striking limitation for a state to place on a sitting president of the United States.
"That's a pretty significant statement about a lack of trust of the president's capabilities," Hackney said, given that Trump is — in most other respects — one of the most powerful people on Earth. "It's truly astounding."

The foundation's troubles were first uncovered in 2016 — starting when a Post reporter attended a Trump campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa. Onstage, Trump gave away a $100,000 check from the Trump Foundation to a local charity.
Federal law prohibits charities' money from "participating" in political campaigns.
In addition, The Post found that Trump had used the charity's money to make a $25,000 donation to a political committee associated with then-Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R). Charities are prohibited from making political gifts.
The Post also found that Trump had taken more than $250,000 from the charity to settle lawsuits involving his for-profit businesses.

This is GREAT NEWS! Hopefully it's only the beginning of Trump being held accountable for the things he does.

I think it's awful news that the United States of America has someone in the White House who's just been fined $2 million and ordered another $1.8 million in restitution.

What happened in this case: Trump's friend, wrestling Promotor Linda McMahon, donated $5 million to Trump's charitable foundation (tax write off for charity). Trump then used that money as his piggy bank, using it to pay business debts and to purchase items, such as an enormous painting of himself which he put in one of his hotels.

To avoid a larger penalty, Trump and all of his adult children signed agreements to never operate any charity in the State of New York, without strict oversight.

This is not a man who should be in charge of our nation.

"The settlement, which was finalized last month and announced on Thursday in the judge's order, included a detailed admission of misconduct that is rare for the president, who has long employed a scorched-earth approach toward fighting lawsuits.

Among Mr. Trump's admissions in court papers: The charity gave his campaign complete control over disbursing the $2.8 million that the foundation had raised at a fund-raiser for veterans in Iowa in January 2016, only days before the state's presidential nominating caucuses. The fund-raiser, he acknowledged, was in fact a campaign event.

The president also admitted to using the foundation to settle the legal obligations of companies he owned, including Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Florida, and the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester County, N.Y. And he acknowledged that the foundation purchased the $10,000 portrait of Mr. Trump, which was ultimately displayed at one of his Florida hotels."

With all the right wingers' complaints about the Clinton Foundation, it is strange there is not a peep about Trump's "charity" corruption. Not.

#VulgarDonald "Trump is a pathological liar." "Trump is a phony." "He doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. He lies practically every word that comes out of this mouth."

Then: "The pattern we've seen under President Obama, disregarding the law, is really one of the most troubling aspects of this presidency, When he disagrees with the law…he simply refuses to comply with it."
Now: "Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny, Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith. This is wrong. This is not America. I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally. I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to chose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court decision."

"What we just saw today was an absolute demonstration that, not only what he (McConnell) told every Republican senator, but what he told the press over and over and over again was a simple LIE."

Then: "This bill (Hurricane Sandy relief) is symptomatic of a larger problem in Washington—an addiction to spending money we do not have. The United States Senate should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects that further expand our debt."
Now: "Today, Texans are hurting. ... Democrats and Republicans in the congressional delegation will stand as one in support of the federal government meeting its statutory obligations to provide the relief to help the Texans who are hurting."

"In the 13 months I've been in the Senate, it has become apparent to me the single thing that Republicans hate and fear the most - and that is when they're forced to tell the truth. It makes their heads explode. An awful lot of the Republicans wanted exactly what Barack Obama wanted, exactly what Nancy Pelosi wanted, exactly what Harry Reid wanted, which is to raise the debt ceiling, but they wanted to be able to tell what they view as their foolish, gullible constituents back home they didn't do it."

"Look – look, of course we should have a surgeon general in place. And we don't have one because President Obama, instead of nominating a health professional, he nominated someone (Dr. Murthy MD & Harvard Medical School Professor) who is an anti-gun activist."

"What I tell people is I wear this (indictment for abuse of power) as a badge of honor"

"His (Robert's) decision yesterday and his decision a couple of years ago violated his oath of office,"

"Today's Democratic Party has decided there is no room for Christians. There is a liberal fascism that is going after Christian believers."

What is tells me is that what they really care about is a government that will ban abortion and pass policies which discriminate against blacks and Mexicans.

At one time I thought much of it might have to do with the right's paranoia about guns. After Trump was labeled a gun grabber by Breitbart, and his base still stood by him, I realized they would let him get away with anything.

A Gun Rights Group Says Trump Has Gone From Supporter "To The Gun-Grabber In Chief"

"As soon as he becomes president, he adopts Michael Bloomberg's agenda."

"The reaction from gun rights groups was swift. Minutes after the meeting, Breitbart News had labeled the president — who was endorsed by the NRA — "Trump The Gun Grabber."

...

As the meeting went on Trump again seemed to suggest the government could ignore due process rights when confiscating weapons.
...

"Take the guns first, go through due process second," he said. "A lot of times by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns away early.""

He gets his money from anyplace he can - by not paying contractors, scamming/conning folks with bad products and services, etc. Why not steal from the military - seems as if there is no low too low for Trump.

I'm waiting to hear what Charles, dr, and the usual right supporters have to say about this. But first, let me say the following to get it out of their system:

But her emails!
Go back to Kenya!
Fake news!
Corrupt New York!

The Trump Foundation is a private charity and has an F grade, meanwhile the Clinton Foundation is a public charity with an A grade.

Oh, I think it's a bunch of BS. The left usurping our laws to punish Trump for winning the election from Crooked Hillary.

One other thing, I just love how disingenuous the OP is. Take this for instance:

From the OP [washingtonpost.com]:
The reason: The president had agreed to submit to extra monitoring of any future charitable activities in New York, so that "the conduct which engendered this petition should not occur in the future," the judge said.

If Trump does ever join a charity board — or starts a new charity of his own — the charity must fill a majority of board seats with people who have no relationship to Trump. It also must hire a qualified attorney, submit to audits and agree never to pay Trump or his company for any services.
But this is what was in the OP:
If Trump does ever join a charity board — or starts a new charity of his own — the charity must fill a majority of board seats with people who have no relationship to Trump. It also must hire a qualified attorney, submit to audits and agree never to pay Trump or his company for any services.
See, the thing is that this was a lawsuit in New York State, not a federal court. And the ruling only applies to charities within New York, not other states like Florida where the president will be moving to.

So Trump can indeed start a charity up again and run it according to the laws within a different state and not even bother with the special conditions the superliberal and unjust court ruled upon.

It is easier to pull teeth from a wild gorilla hyped up on steroids with a pair of tweezers than it is to get a false narrative and fake news out of a liberal's head.
