Misuse of Helpful Comments Feature

I would like to shed light on the misuse of the Helpful Comments feature. By its name, it obviously seems intended for shoppers to vote up a comment that is helpful to other users and related to the deal. But what happens in the majority of deal posts is that some controversy gets started, and when someone drops the mic or says something reasonable to someone ignorant, that post gets voted up as if the "Helpful Comment" feature is an "I Agree With This" feature. In other words, people are treating it like the "Like" button on Facebook.

This obviously causes posts completely unrelated to the deal to show up at the top of the deal page under "Featured Comments." That's where I (and likely others) look first for the best user-submitted content, but when it's filled with worthless comments, it becomes useless.

For instance, this happened just today on this deal post. I wanted to find out about the quality of the safe and if this was actually a good deal, but instead, 2 of 3 Featured Comments are simply responses to an unreasonable person that have nothing to do with the deal.

I can think of at least one potential fix, but you guys can probably come up with a better one.

You could add a "Like" or "I Agree" button in addition to "Helpful Comment." Likes would be fairly useless and would essentially just allow people to feel like they expressed their opinion, but without affecting the Helpful Comment feature.

Hi, Thanks for expressing your thoughts on this.. I just took a look and all three comments do pertain to the item/deal. But any time you feel the helpful comments that hit that spot need looking into you can and should mod alert the thread so the moderators can also check.

Sure, just trying to help shoppers' experience on here! Love SD!

Well, the Featured Comments changed on that deal since I started this thread. But there is still one of the comments that is off-topic (see screenshot). That is a reply to an ignorant poster, and because it was a reasonable reply, people clicked "Helpful Comment" because they agreed with it and wanted to "stick it to" the ignorant poster. That happens all the time. In many situations, all three Featured Comments are posts like that, which again make the feature useless at that point.

If you don't mind me asking: what could a mod do about posts that got voted up and are illegitimately appearing in Featured Comments? Can they remove them from that section without removing the posts entirely?
