Buy something like this. But really...play or rub with his/her paws and they will let you clip them fairly readily and they might scratch but will cause zero damage. Every two weeks or so is enough. They will still feel the need to scratch but shan't f*ck things up.

Agreed that you should support your local shelter.

I rescued a momma cat and her kitten this way, but I paid the adoption fees and provide food, litter, etc. since I was fostering to adopt.

They actually suggested it to save me money on medical.

@domerbc You could go my route and pick up random cats from your backyard.

haha that's what we did. got ours off the street as a 3mo old this past summer. she's awesome. found a great home for her 2 siblings also.
our county has a free spay / neuter program, so i only had to pay for the shots. not a bad deal!

best deal is to sign up as a foster. the shelter will let you choose your cat/kitten and give you everything you need to get started including food and litter. they will also pay for anything medical while you are a foster. you can start off as a foster even if you intend to keep the cat and get everything paid for.

i dont think this is the way one should do it, i think people should support their local shelters by paying the adoption fee... but its a pretty sweet deal if it's a deal you're looking for. shelters get tons of donations of food and toys and litter to give to fosters for free.

My local ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) has a black Friday special. $25 adoption fee, including spay/neuter and vaccinations. We did that last year for my 2 year old daughter and our cat has been the sweetest ever.

I'm getting ready to adopt a female either this month or next from the animal shelter in the county next to me.
They have adoption days once a month where they knock out their $80 adoption fee.
I'll pay $3 for an altered female or $16 for an unaltered. If unaltered they will give me a voucher.
She will be tested, first set of shots & microchipped.

Goodluck! I'll keep posting cat deals as I come across them. I shared this earlier in this thread, but here are some great deals on quality cat stuff...

Good deal. I forgot to mention she was chipped, too. They won't, though adopt out without being "fixed." That's their effort to ensure no adoptions go on to add to the already over-population.
