GLOW EZ LOCK 42" WHITE BEAUTY DISH is an ingenious portable version of the light modifier famous for striking fashion and portraiture images showcasing the incomparable safe and sure EZ Lock system. No more clumsy construction, fumbling with flex resistant rods or struggling in frustration for careful alignment of speedring holes. The 16 ribbed dish opens up and closes down,'umbrella style.' The ingenious self-catch EZ Lock surrounds a thick center shaft, providing a comfortable place for your fingers to push-lock the mechanism open, and a generous wide button to unlock-release and close the beauty dish painlessly. The quick-to-setup quasi-parabola saucer like assembly has all the advantages of the beauty dish allure without the disadvantages of damage that a metallic dish confronts during location travel and is free of any of the drawbacks of a delicate bendable dish. This folding unit is made for the road, however, with sturdy aluminum support rods for structural stability and extraordinary fabric strength.

I never unsnap mine.

I leave it assembled when I pack it away. If you're removing the diffusion often, I can see the snaps getting annoying though.

Thank you!

Some tips:

Be very conscious of skin tones

Dark skin shows color cast more easily so it's sensitive to subtle changes in white balance.
The orange and yellow color sliders easily affect dark skin tones, so play with their hue and saturation

Dark skin has more shine and shows reflections more easily,

Use a soft diffused light.
Use a larger light source and move it closer.

You want to sculpt the face, not bleach it.

Aim for a "kiss" of light. Too much light will over expose and eliminate the natural shadows, flattening out the skin.
Be careful with direct on-axis lighting - it can flatten the face. If using on-axis lighting you may want to move the light close for softer light with more falloff and shadows.
Try playing with off-axis lighting (45 degree loop or rembrandt) this can give more shadows, depth, and shape to the face.
Learn how to dodge and burn the face if you not familiar with it already.

Traditionally a soft box is rectangular shaped and a beauty dish is a round metal dish with a reflector in the middle.

This is constructed more like a soft box (fabric and wires) but can function as a large beauty dish if you remove the outer diffusion.

I would probably get the silver version as it's more efficient and brighter

I use the 34" silver version:

I would go for the silver one. The outer diffuser does all the diffusing work, and you have the option of using it without the diffuser and the silver interior to get a harder light.

Does anyone know how does this compare to a Godox 90L or 90H?

I bought this a few months ago. After a few months with it, I can say I'm very happy with my purchase!
Easy to set-up and break down, light, and comes with a carrying case.
The only con I experienced was that the outside had a little tear with not much, so just be careful.

Is this dish microwave safe?
Yes absolutely. It's even oven safe. I have the 34 inches and I use it often to bake pies.

Anyone have experience with this and a speedlight? Just wondering if a speedlight would be enough for something like this...

I've used speedlights with some softboxes but you lose a good deal of power. If you decide to get it, make sure you get the S-bracket with Bowens mount in order to be able to attach the speedlight to it.

I ordered two and hope to use them as video lights for YouTube stuff. I'm assuming that the light should be pretty even with the double diffusion, right?

Isn't a 42" beauty dish the same as a soft box? If not what is the difference between this and a soft box?
