I like the paperback format for this. In the penguin classics deluxe series. Obviously more expensive.

I recall reading "The Pearl" as a freshman in high school. A very unforgettable novel.

Definitely, I read Of Mice and Men in high school and it got me excited about literature. I also read the Pearl then but it wasn't as of much interest to me. All these are at a good level for high school.

Longer Steinbeck books like East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath are both awesome and maybe at a slightly more advanced level due to length.

Cannery Row is an under appreciated gem of a book. This is a great collection by my favorite author!

There is no better classic American author than Steinbeck. Tortilla flat is also a hidden gem.
