Farscape and Stargate SG1 help me survive through my teenage years with some escapism. Say no to drugs, yes to Syfy!! lol

Yep, I was wrong about the fire but this was the interview quote.

From a 2009 report prior to the upscaled blu-rays being released

...The series was filmed on 35mm, which is far superior to HD, said Henson, but the visual effects were created for a standard-definition format, and when looking at the costs of re-creating the visual effects in HD, it would have been in the millions of dollars. Per season. Understandable for a series that holds the Guinness world record for the most digital effects in a TV series.

Unfortunately, there was yet another cost that would kill the possibility of Farscape appearing in high-definition. At the end of each season, the original camera negatives were archived, which according to Henson left "a gymnasium of footage" that was particularly costly to store due to the volatility of the film itself. And so, I assume, the original 35mm prints of Farscape have been scrapped.

Henson stated that the Farscape series was produced in both NTSC and PAL formats, and that PAL's 576 horizontal lines of resolution (compared to NTSC's 480) was the highest-definion version of Farscape available. This is a far sight less than HD's top resolution of 1,080 lines, and a sad fate for such a visually stunning and complex series.

I thought this show(one of my favorites btw) was shot in a resolution much lower than 1080P that blu-ray provides. If that is so.....the blu-ray release can't be any better than the dvd. Anyone know how Farscape was shot?

Too bad this doesn't come with digital copy. If it did, I'd be all over this.

From what I remember the show was shot in 4:3 format but the problem is that all the original footage was destroyed in a fire so they weren't able to do the normal transfers like other shows. I know they have released it a couple other times on Bluray and it wasn't great so I'm not sure what they are doing different this time and it will still probably be in 4:3 but I haven't looked into it at all.

Peacekeeper wars I believe was HD so that's native 1080. Seasons 1-4 are all PAL so this is an upscale conversion as per the previous 2011 and 2013 Blu ray releases [blu-ray.com] (the original 35mm footage is lost and the SFX would have to be redone in HD). Only difference I think is that this includes the peacekeeper wars.

It was shot in 35mm but the fx were in SD. The Blu-rays are upscaled from the PAL broadcast video masters which are 576i and also benefit from being mastered from more modern video codecs. There was talk of remastering them with new HD fx but the cost was more than $1 million per season. Rumor has it the cost of storing the 35mm originals was prohibitive and they were scrapped.
The audio is a different story. The DTS-HD MA mastering is far better than the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio included with the DVDs.

Yes. All four seasons and The Peacekeeper Wars are included.

I don't have the source for that, but it was posted in a thread here a month or two back when this went on sale.

I think it's 720p and not 1080p actually
