New switch user here. Does anyone have thoughts on whether it's necessary to get the charging grip?

Not necessary, but nice to have if you want to charge an extra pair while gaming. Not a bad price either. Not trying to change your mind or anything, but if you don't see a need for the charging grip I'd recommend putting that $20 towards a pro controller instead.

It's nice to have but not a necessity. Necessities would be (in my opinion) glass protector for the screen, SD card (if buying digital games), a carrying case (if on the go), and a pro controller for docked play. I'd also recommend the satisfye grip for handheld play.

I absolutely agree. It's more for if you have extra Joy-Cons that need charging. Then instead of buying a charging base this works as a charger and grip as well for the Joy-Cons.

Any reason to get this over the amazon charging dock that's around $20? Just seems easier to be able to charge 4 joy-cons instead of 2 with this grip.

The only reason is you can play while charging.

Buy one with a built in battery so you aren't tethered to a wire while charging

Picked up one of these at a Fred Meyer a couple of months back for $15. That's worth a look if you have any around.

Can you link to the Satisfye grip you're referring to?
