Western Digital blue is the same price on Amazon. After experiencing 3 Seagate failures Of three different models on my NAS, I've pretty much sworn Seagate off.

Quality for the larger size Seagate drives looks better in the BackBlaze reliability report. edit: The latest 2019 report showed the 12TB drives as having the same reliability as the 4TB drives.

Have used many Seagate NAS drives, they hold up way better than your experience.

Drink the Backblaze koolaid - they cheaped out early and never used the VN and Ironwolf drives. They used Barracuda consumer drives in comparison to a few select WD Reds - hardly apples-to-apples.

same here. Historically seagate is the worse of all drive manufacturers. Seagate is a HUGE pass from me too.

That is backblaze's thing, they use cheap drives but in RAID pods to keep their prices lower. A drive fails, they just mark it offline and replace it when they replace the entire pod.

I have had nothing but good experiences with Seagate. I have had issues with WD and no longer use them. This is a good price for 4TB.

Since people are falling back on anecdotes why don't I add mine to the pile. I've gone through tens of personal HDDs since my first PC in '98 and the only I've ever had fail was a Seagate Barracuda around 2010.

I've also had many other Seagates that didn't have issues. However for my money WD is the most reliable. I've got two 7200rpm WD Blues in my desktop that recently passed 31,000 hours in use and are chugging along merrily.

That being said you shouldn't let anecdotes in a comment section be the deciding factor in your component purchases. Go look at large sample size rigorous testing and intentional fail tests.

I have 4x of these in my DS918+ right now. They're noisy! I placed the NAS 10ft away from my desk, can still hear the drives. While my WD Reds in other NAS is super quiet. That one sit 3 ft. from me, can't hear it. Been working fine for 6 years now. Fingers crossed the IronWolf is as reliable.

Seagate is sub par. Have had several Seagate drives fail. Only a few WD drive failures and these were ones that were 10+ years old. Seagate only a couple years. Still a good deal on some drives though.

I personally buy blue drives and flash them to act like red drives.

Seagate was perfectly fine up until the mid 2000s. They started sucking the second they took away their 5 year warranty
