Great deal for folks like me upgrading from verion 5 to 7 for $99. Adds 4+ new synths, Native Instruments NKS support, plugins, more presets, minor enhancements in features and compatibility, and future-proofs your investment for future versions of Mac and Windows OS.

I have the "free" Analog Lab (version 4 or 5?) that came with my Arturia midi controller. Can anyone advise if there's much in the way of benefits on top of that beyond the additional synths, or is it mostly the same, not worth the upgrade..?

The free version that came with your controller has about ~600 presets (it comes with the Lite version). This package includes not only the full version of Analog Lab, which has around ~6000 presets, but also all of the analog emulation synths that Arturia sells (I think around 20 or so). These instruments are among the best in the industry for emulating older synths.
In the end though, it really depends on whether you need to dig deep into sound design, or you are interesting in emulating vintage synths. If you are just producing music from mostly presets, then Analog Lab is probably enough (wait for a sale on the upgrade to the full preset list, typically goes for around $50). If however you want to dig deeper and emulate a specific synth sound (Jupiter 8, SEM, Moog, etc.) then it's worth getting the upgrade to the V Collection.
