Keep in mind that Lesters are heavy, way heavier than say a Squire Tele or Strat. Also, you're going to want to keep that guitar in a case and the Epiphone case is $110 and almost never goes on sale, but it's really the best case for this guitar. Amp, cable, picks, strings, straps, stand, and tuner all add to the final tally, and that's just the basics. BUT, this is a great price for this really nice guitar.

If you want to spend $200, there are plenty of packs that also include the guitar and most of the add ons. Epiphone has a Les Paul player pack for $210 if he wants a Lester. Assuming that this will be his first guitar?

We were looking at spending around $200 for my son. Will there be black friday sales or is this as good as it gets? This guitar wasn't even on our list but this seems like a great price.

I never saw this guitar discounted further, if they do for Black Friday you would be getting close to 50% off. I don't think it's likely, as this is great guitar for affordable price and sells quite well.

It'won't be his first. He has a mustang amp and a couple pedals collected at this point. He's been playing for 2 years now and we are looking to get a quality guitar. He likes the les paul and the sg 400.

Forgot about the case. Thanks for that. Definitely factors into the price.

You can find used squiers for $150 but the good ones like the classic vibes are $275 used and $399 new. If the kid wants a Les Paul, then I would get him one. Guitar takes a lot of practice and will power to play everyday. How unmotivated would you be playing a used squier when you wanted a new Les Paul.

This is great for the price but if you were really tight on budget, I would get the Epiphone Les Paul II for about $199-$229.

You can call musicians friend and even ask for a discount to the customer rep. Just say you got their reference from a friend

I didn't think to call. Nice tip.

The poster above who mentioned the will power and practice needed to get better is spot on.

He's been practicing before school and after school so maybe we will reward that.

Thanks for feedback from everyone. You try to read about amps and pickups etc and you could be sucked into a black hole for days.

How are these compared to a Plus Top Pro?

My Opinion of you want a good guitar go for it. It's a good price. The lower priced epi's are lower quality/features. The plus top only has a better photo flame laminate on top. You can upgrade the tuners/pots/pickups in a few years and it'll be a long time keeper.
