This is a really nice and compact laptop. Love mine....except for one problem. Many of the screens have flaky hinge connectors that cause an intermittent screen freeze. It's a wiring short and quite difficult to fix (ie: must replace the entire screen). Hit and miss if you get a lemon. Too bad, because otherwise this is a great pc for the size.

Hi. Is this same issue on the 13" Envy?

Completely agree. That version (just a change in the processor alone) is $1,099 (but the laptop has a smaller form factor, 1" sleeker than the laptop in this thread)

It has been this price intermittently over the past 2 weeks meaning it will be $829, then they raise it to $849, then they drop it to $829. On Black Friday it will be available for $800.

Separately, do note that HP charges a 15% restocking fee on all returns regardless of whether you opened the laptop or not. That's a deal-breaker for most.

Just a quick scan on the HP forums and while I don't have personal experience with the Envy, the symptoms sound exactly the same. HP support will claim it is sw and ask you to do things like update BIOS -- never (maybe rarely) works. Only permanent fix is replacing the screen and hope for a good hinge connection next time.

However, a cheaper, less portable fix, is to simply use your HDMI port to go to an external monitor. It is only the laptop display that is frozen, not the PC, so I always mirror my display and turn on the 2nd monitor if/when I need it (a pain, and not portable, but....)

then one should get the 10th gen which is a new design.
