YMMV
With the continuous problems with the Max8's Southwest has been sending out messages to make changes to your flight. This has allowed me to get the best flights for the cheapest cost.

Here's what I have been doing:
  1. Book the cheapest flight (points or $) within 10 days of the actual day you want to arrive and depart.
  2. I also look at neighboring cities (ie PVD or BOS) to make sure I'm getting the lowest cost.
  3. Around 90 days prior to my departure day, I visit http://www.southwest.com/rebook3 and check to see if I get a message that I can select new flights AT NO ADDITIONAL COSTS.

Here's what I have scored so far:
BOS to MCO - Thanksgiving Week - $67/way
BOS to FLL - February Vacation Week - $77/way

Just remember YMMV. I'm not sure about International Trips.

Southwest has never had changed fees. I have changed flights to cheaper flights literally 1hr before departure

No change fees on SW you are just paying flight difference...

You missed what he is saying. I've done this several times before. I booked a flight for a Monday because it was cheaper and then was able to change it to a more expensive Sunday flight for free despite the Sunday flight costing twice as much. You are correct that normally you have to pay the fare difference but they waive it if flight times or planes change. I don't book with the intention of changing it but have been able to change to a more preferable, expensive departure time for free.

Nevermind. I would not book a flight on a day I can't fly in hopes of changing later to one I can.

90 days prior to flying check the site to see if you are eligible to change your current flight to any other timing within 10 days off your original departure.

Why not try? If it does not work then just refund the entire ticket and use the credit later on another flight within a year. No fee to cancel your flight either. Only caveat is if you don't plan on flying within a year.

I tried the link above, and entered my flights but no message about switching flights. Do I have to go thru the process of actually selecting new flights to see the message or does it pop up once I enter my confirmation # and number? Or I guess my flight isnt eligible.
Thanks for posting the info! Got a flight to Hawaii in Jan, figured I can try to get a better arrival time.

Yes but what the OP is stating is that 90 days prior to flying you can change your flight to a more expensive flight within a 10 period for free.

IF it qualifies due a SWA flight cancellation or material schedule change, force majeure event, etc., they typically will send you an email stating that you can rebook without additional cost. The op is right, but it's a senseless YMMV post.

I am planning on booking on Jan 12 from mco to pro for $209. So should I book the flight 3 days earlier for 87$ then try to change it??? Can I cancel if it doesn't work? Do I get a credit for future use or refunds my credit card? Thanks in advance

So I think I understand. I need 3 to tickets home from FLL on April 5th. Prices are currently outrageous. If I book the Thursday before hand (currently $100), I could potentially go back in 3 months prior and hope that it'll let me change it? I assume I'll need to make sure it's on a max 8?

Does the original flight have to be on a Max8?

Does it work if there is less than 90 days before departure?
