New firmware almost makes G9 a no brainer in m43 world. It's that good. One notable downside IMO is no phase autofocus. Panasonic once you incorporate phase AF, you will become king!

https://youtu.be/qCmi_RXwOzE this video convinced me the g9 was the best camera for me. If you're going to shoot photo and video and don't need to do high end video editing. this is probably the camera for you. The dual image stabilization let's you walk and shoot video and hand hold long photo exposures without motion blur. Only thing with better stabilization is the gopro 8

Nice video on it! That video stabilization is so smooth!! Looking for a replacement on my aging D7200. Never even thought of Panasonic. Been eyeing the Sony models for awhile now. Guess this is a great micro 4/3s option.

Because this camera is a whole lot lighter and perform the same as the Sony. There a lot of m43 lens that are better or comparable to full frame. This is a pro user camera, not a beginner camera, with the recent software update the video quality is better than full frame.

Could you clarify what you mean by "street price"? I searched Slickdeals for "G9" but couldn't find any deal < 1k before, would be interested to know if there's other ways to find out cheap deals for cameras like the G9.
G9 street price is $1100, body only, street price is not $900 is the past 6 months, I know because i just bought one and has been looking for a deal since January. This is a good deal.

For video - kind of...
For photos - utter nonsense.

It's not a dumb question, per se. But it is a tired question that has been hashed OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER again. Go type phrases like "why i went micro 4/3 over full frame" into google, and other similar search terms, and then just read discussions and watch Youtube videos to your heart's content. You'll get results like these (none are mine):

https://petapixel.com/2017/03/24/...rame-dslr/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNmptggyxMM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp3rlNzHGyw

For me, my E-M1 with a set of lenses (usually 12-40mm and Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8) fits in a small bag that I can throw into my normal hiking backpack, instead of having specifically a photography bag. So I can go out as a hiker, or as an off-roader, or whatever else, instead of specifically going out as a photographer. I don't have to choose between taking my camera OR taking my water bottle and hiking gear.

All of my photos are on web now, hardly ever printed. And even someone with a 4k screen, at full screen is only an 8 megapixel view. More likely, they're scrolling through social media, so they're looking at a 0.6 MP version of a photo.

If I didn't get a great deal on this E-M1 from a family member that practically gave it away just to upgrade to an E-M1 Mk II, I'd be getting the G9 today to upgrade my older micro 4/3 camera. As it is, this camera is a LOT better than mine, but for my use it won't justify the return on investment, so as much as I'm drooling over the camera, I'll be passing.

And if I weren't invested in micro 4/3 today, and I was asked to get a larger sensor, I'd be choosing the Fuji APS camera over the Sony full frame. Once you add up the size of all of your lenses, full frame cameras are compact, but the lenses have to stay large, even on mirrorless.

This is a really good price for a killer video and capable stills camera. Outstanding EVF and touch screen, some of the best IBIS you'll find, 4K 60fps, very user-friendly design. Biggest downside is contrast AF and the high-ISO performance that comes with a smaller sensor. If you care at all about quality video the G9 is an absolute no-brainer unless you KNOW you need what the GH5 has that the G9 doesn't, or you want to spend 3x as much. Great Lumix and Leica lenses are quite accessible and reasonably priced too - i.e. the 42.5mm 1.7.
How is this vs the GH5? I've been waiting for a sale on the GH5
I'm wanting to shoot video with a mirrorless and from what I've seen, the GH5 is better for video

G9 or a G5?

looks like I'm still going to hold out for the G5 simply because of the AF tracking.

Glad to see more camera deals even I don't use Panasonic system

People like to say why not get this deal instead of the other one since it is cheaper now. But keep in mind, buying camera is just the beginning. You need to see the whole picture instead of just small pieces. Sometimes vendor get you on hook by lowering camera price but get you back from the lenses price etc. You need to see every categories including lens selection, size, weight and your shooting style to determine what is the best deal for yourself.

I haven't used the GH5, but I thoroughly researched both to eventually decide on the G9. Here are the differences I can recall as it relates to video.
  • G9 is supposed to have better IBIS (6.5 stops of compensation vs 5 stops on the GH5)
  • G9 has somewhat better dynamic range
  • G9 has 120fps capable EVF at .83x, GH5 is .73x at 60fps max
  • GH5 has 50% more resolution on the touchscreen which is also .2" larger at 3.2"
  • GH5 has no 4K recording limits; G9 is 29:59 for 4K30 and 9:59 for 4K50 or 60
With the new firmware coming on Tuesday, it will be able to shoot 10-bit 4:2:2 which used to be a GH5 perk. Waveforms and V-LogL will be available as a $99 paid upgrade on the G9. I'm not sure if you have to pay for waveforms on the GH5, but I'm pretty sure V-LogL also ran $99 extra. Both bodies are getting AF improvements with the new firmware so I can only assume AF performance will be essentially equal.

To me the big difference is recording limits. Personally I tend to do shorter clips to edit together, so it doesn't matter for me. If you will be doing long form recording, the GH5 easily wins. Outside of that, for me it's the G9 all day.

I'm confused by this... the G5 is over 5 years older than the G9, and naturally the G9 is superior in nearly every technical way (aside from being larger and heavier, if you want to avoid that).

I think I've come to the same conclusion as you actually. You know if you are on firmware 1.2 you can hack it to remove the 30 minutes limit? I'm just going to link the firmware updates here since nobody has bothered to [panasonic.com].

Depends what you are shooting...if you're talking low-light, sure, its hard to beat full-frame. If you're working in brighter light or longer focal lengths, then yeah, m4/3 will shine. Both for size/weight savings, and the ability to get some really quality lenses in the $4-600 range, while a Sony variant runs $1000+ (and even that is 3rd party in most cases).
