Recommendation of a router with feature of Internet access control / restriction.

3 10 November 17, 2019 at 05:18 PM
Folks,
I am looking for recommendation for home use of a router than can some or all the following
- Internet cafe like restriction on Internet access to various devices (Phone, PC etc.) including time restrictions.
- Ability to completely disable a device irrespective of wifi or wired.
- Ability to set time period per device.
- Most importantly - ability to block youtube and similar sites (but allow sling, hulu etc.)
- Remote management and monitoring of usages
I have tried linksys, asus and more with parental controls, but the dang early teenage son keeps finding work around..which I do praise him for his ability. But this youtube addiction needs to be fixed.
I have given up on using monitoring software on devices. Too much work and extremely easy to work around.

I know this is kind of off the normal request, but I am seeing what is out there other than those pricey corporate firewall routers/switches.

thank you all in advance for all the positive advice and suggestions.

.

Everything you said to me screams enterprise devices. Setup with them will be harder and they will be more expensive. On the corporate side of things we like to call this a people management problem and not a technology problem. No solution here will be 100% bullet proof and chances are good if the kid has bypassed things already tried they will try and succeed again. What is he doing now to bypass things?

My suggestion would be a router running PFSense and taking time to learn it and then stay on top of traffic logs. Combined with a less privileged user on devices so software can't be installed.

The real question is how much do you want to spend?

It doesn't sound like your router is the issue. This is something that you probably can't win without having someone more knowledgable and determined than your son on your side. You should assume that he has your passwords, whether by guessing, finding a hardcopy, or hacking your devices, etc, he knows how to find them. I was that son back in the 90s and I wish you luck because you're going to need it. I'd give more advice if my knowledge of this stuff wasn't a couple decades out of date.
