Canon printer needed

141 11 November 22, 2019 at 05:10 AM
My poor wife has so many problems with her Canon Pixma Fine printer, that she uses with a Lenova laptop I need to buy her a new one.
She likes the Canon brand for some reason. Whatever I buy would need to be that brand.
She uses the printer mainly for business reports. On the weekends she like to print pictures.
I need help trying to find a good replacement for her current printer.

I just bought this Canon imageCLASS MF642Cdw laser printer for $170 and so far quite pleased with it. Has relatively cheap replacement toner cartridges (054H) on amazon for ~$80

It's going to be this price again for BF - LINK

I've never had good luck with color laser printers on longevity, either I go too cheap on the toner, or something else seems to go awry, I swear by monochrome laser though (been through 2 color canon lasers and one color brother laser).

I bought a few Canon MB5420s for printing color flyers and such for my shirt/sign shop and have been happy with them. They're inkjet based but have larger cart sizes (20-70 ml, whereas most desktop inkjets will have 5-10 ml or less) and doesn't seem to have too much problem going through idle use for weeks. I think it might take a hit in photo quality output, but I have done some photos with it that customers liked. Works great for envelopes too so far.

I should probably add a bit more clarification to longevity since it was a brief statement.
I have about 7 monochrome laser printers that I maintain, 3 of them are Brothers, and 4 of them are Canons, all have been in use for about 5+ years now, 2 of those are used daily to print out faxes, hotel registrations, reports, and the like, so they go through heavy use (around 50 pages a day average I would say), the others are intermittent office use. These all use el cheapo remanned toner carts for ~$10/cart without issue.

My Brother color laser lasted about 2 years before it died, I ran Brother toner in it for the first year, remanned after that, then I started running into drum problems where the toner got mixed all over into the other colors into all aspects of the printer. I probably ran about 20,000 pages through it total. Replaced it with a Canon color laser, sampler carts went fine, went through a set of remanned carts, color shift was horrible, had to do a bunch of profiling changes, then another set of carts later one of my colors completely crapped out, the other color Canon I have is still functioning for our auto shop, but only gets minimal use (~50 pages a month), I use Canon branded toner in it, but haven't had to change the carts since I went through the tester carts.

So I've kind of developed a rule for myself "if I'm going to buy color laserjet I'm not doing remanned carts, but I'd rather just stick to monochrome". I've had similar problems with aftermarket inkjet carts before as well, but since the bulk of my paper printing is monochrome, I will stand behind monochrome laser printers (generally I order v4 ink or ecs remanned carts).
