This looks just like the one I bought nearly 20 years ago. It's still works fine. There are two major drawbacks to this thing that makes the others more appealing. First is it's a nightmare to clean. Removable plates would make such a difference. Trying to scrub this thing without ruining the electronics is a chore. Second is the standard hinge on top. Whatever is on top closest to the hinge gets smashed and burnt, while the far side is undercooked. Competition has moving hinges that allow the lid to close evenly, cooking even.

Is this a good price for this item? Does this have ceramic trays or just coated trays?

We have this and use it all the time. I think we paid around $20 2 years ago. You can do about 4 burgers in this or two grilled cheese.

I got this last week and just used it for the first time tonight. Worked pretty well but the top plate gets a little hotter than the bottom so you end up having to flip the food. Cleaning would be easier with removable plates but if you wipe it off while it's still warm you're done (I guess that depends on what you cooked).

Your burgers are smaller than grill cheese?

Non-removable plates is a deal-killer for me. PITA to clean.

The secret, I've been told, is to line the contact grill plates with aluminum foil. The heat is still effectively transferred to the food, and when complete you can toss the foil and just clean the grease trap. It's worked well for me; I haven't needed to wipe the plates of my grill in months.
