Looks like Target has not caught up yet and still shows $49.99, whereas best buy and Amazon as already updated their prices to reflect $24.99.

This serves up local media better because of Kodi.

If you don't have ripped local media then Roku is a tiny bit better because of less advertising on home page.

Kodi = jailbreak? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Info came from threads that I went through just now.

amazon stick can play better off your local network even if you don't go Kodi. It has the VLC player app. Roku is hit and miss with local content as it doesn't support a lot of the formats.

Jailbreak on the Firestick 4K isn't a specific term. Using words like sideloading and rooting are more specific.

To answer your question, you must simply sideload Kodi. It has a great interface for movies, music and tv shows that are stored locally, meaning your own rips. Use Kodi in conjunction with Plex (free) on a PC, to stream your own media to the Firestick 4K. The Kodi add-on "PlexKodiConnect" works very well with Kodi on this stick.

It's decent, but the Roku provides a better, cleaner experience, access to additional free content, and supports more third party apps.

I'd say the Roku stick+ 4k for $30 is a better option.

Too many commercials to watch the extra Roku content you mention. There are ways to make the firestick a cleaner experience, especially in the future, now that it can be unlocked an rooted. I actually don't have a problem with the interface compared to the Roku. Both have ads and are far from perfect stock.

The Roku remote will have you never looking back. Plex works great on Roku.
Fire stick was disappointing from my experience, remote, interface, amazon centered and responsiveness were annoying.

Plex is stunted compared to Kodi with KodiPlexConnect add-on using a Firestick 4K.

Help Request - totally new to creating a video-watching-PC, but skilled w PC's, could you give me (& lurking followers) a link or two on how to set this up? I have a lot of torr d/l'ed content like movies & TV shows, need to send to my older Sony 60"
Kodi and Plex sound like good solution if I can find steps to setting it up.
Must avoid Dig' Rts Mgmt problems w torr source content.
& related Followup: what's the best way to save 1080p (maybe 4K later) OTA shows from the amplified antenna I just bought, within the above system?
Thank you!

Here's a free Fire stick with Alexa remote when you pre-pay 2 months of Sling.

I don't think it's the 4k, and you cannot combine with any other Sling offers, but someone may want this:

Warning: anybody ever thought of WHY they've dropped the price on these units?

I think there's some sort of fault with them....I purchased one back when Amazon had the whole 'select accounts' offer going on.

Once plugged into HDMI and powered by external power supply, they fall asleep if left unused....and don't wake up thereafter.

Remote key combination of hold "Select" + "Play/Pause" key for 5 seconds? Nope, doesn't reboot.
HAVE to pull the power supply cable to get it to reboot. Works fine thereafter, until you don't use it again for a while :/

Potential solutions:
Turn off HDCP, if able? Good luck, older TV owners...
Turn off HDMI-CEC? Then your TV doesn't turn on with it :/

Consider this before purchase, I think these newer units are garbage....

Oh wait, I know: "Alexa! Pull the power plug on the Fire TV Stick and get it to work the way it should!"

I use a TiVo (kmttg) to save some TV Shows to watch using Kodi streamed from my Plex server. I am sure other options exist but I don't have hands on experience with them.

If you are familiar with PCs the setup really isn't difficult. There is a learning curve however. A quality router is important. An OTG USB adapter and a sd card/USB memory stick for the Firestick 4K makes the setup easier.

Start by side-loading Kodi and learn how to install add-on's. The KodiPlexConnect add-on is a must and add-on's aren't the easiest thing to figure out but once you understand the flow it becomes a piece of cake.

Plex is probably the easiest part but you do need to name the shows properly. After the shows name you add "S01E01" for season 1 episode 1.

Use youtube and tutorials for the little details you must figure out or pm me and I will try to help.
