1. It doesn't have an IPS display.
2. It doesn't have a backlit keyboard.

Both of these were confirmed by people who actually bought the laptop.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 yr old CPU (wrong. 1 yr old. Released [intel.com]Q3 2018)

keep in mind this is running an 8th Gen Intel Processor, current is 10th gen ('9th' was 'high power only'; '10th gen' Comet Lake is same archetecture with 5% speed bump; 10th gen Ice Lake is also 5% faster, but does have significantly improved Iris Pro GPU in SOME CPUs)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2-cell, 37Wh battery....general workload including writing into an online app, streaming some music, and a bit of web browsing, with the screen brightness set at around 75 percent, depleted around 25 percent of a full battery in two hours..."

Specs on the BestBuy page, and Q&A on the same page (answered by Asus rep) say no backlit keyboard.

Asus specs say backlit is optional:
https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS...15-X512FA/
Illuminated chiclet keyboard (Optional)

The manual posted on BestBuy's page is generic and applies to many models under this line.

So in summary, Asus confirms this model does not have a backlit keyboard.

This would fit the bill as long as the kids aren't playing high-end games.

As far a Black Friday goes it depends on your free time (to look for and wait for a particular laptop to be in stock or keep searching for another one if the first one is out of stock), how much your time is worth, and how much you think you want to spend/save.

If it were me, and I was looking for what you're looking for, I'd pull the trigger and enjoy the time the family. Even if I might end up paying a bit more.

This has backlit keyboard.
The specifications on the Best Buy page says it does not. Would be nice to get verification from someone that owns this model X512FA-BI7A

Am I missing something obvious that confirms this has an IPS screen?

According to Asus website, the "Wide-view" panel is optional, along with the backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader. Usually they clearly advertise when a laptop has IPS screen, yet I can't find it on the best buy site.

So promising, but the battery life is likely to be poor for an i7 with only a 2-cell sub-40WHr battery.
