Difference between regular and extra? Is one firmer with more bounce or something?
Regular felt normal. Some will say it's for indoors. You can use them outdoors just fine. Regular and Extra duty is about the felt on the balls. Extra duty is good and made for hard courts.

The recent tennis game has added more top spin to the sport, so extra duty balls are design to last longer and take the abuse of the spin better. If it matters any, last I heard, in the ATP/WTA tours, men use the extra duty balls and women use regular duty balls. And most of the tour is played on hard court. Mostly because men play with more spin with women. Bounce wise, they're essentially the same. I just get extra-duty always.

These are the most popular balls because they're solid quality and a good price. Nearly all USTA, high school and club tournaments seem to use these cases. If you're teaching or coaching, these are good to go. The ones from Dick's are shipped direct from Penn, you go to the store you'll fine the original shipping label attach on them. I can't say if these are like 'factory seconds' or of lower quality than buying from Tennis Warehouse or Tennis Express. I did have one can from the last time I purchase and the can was still sealed but no pressure. Brand new dead balls is no fun. For reference from Tennis shops, a case of 24 cans go for $59.99.

As for dogs... Athlete Works from Walmart is cheaper, and after a few months of coaching, we usually have some many dead balls. I pack them up and donate them to local animal shelters and to retirement homes for their walkers as part of service projects or my students.

These risks are serious, but you don't have to throw out all of your dog's tennis balls. Instead, make sure that your dog only has access to his tennis balls during supervised play sessions.
