Mine looked used as well. The plastic piece covering the battery had something on it, couldn't rub it off. When I put the battery pack in, it was hit or miss in connecting and one of the terminals on the battery pack had a little rust on it. Any way, I used a brillo pad to remove the rust and took it apart to adjust the prongs that contact battery out a little further. It paired easily for me, keypad works and I got re-keyed. There was a piece of tape on the inside, stating what the issue was, something with the keypad not working.
