This has been posted over and over already! I won't buy them unless they go below $400. Just my personal price cutoff as I already have WAY too many speakers right now.

Can a regular 100 watt receiver power these or will you need an amp?

Ah, 530! Definitely without a doubt I would go for the Polks - WAY higher quality speakers. Though if you prefer a really "bright" high end you might be happier with the JBL's. The Polk's are much more laid back and smooth sounding. Depends on your preference.

Sure a 100 watt receiver will power these fine. Will you get the best sound quality out of them? - probably not. The important thing is you will have a quality pair of speakers for a great price that you can still use later if you decide to upgrade your amp.

If I didn't have way better speakers already, I would be all over these for the price. If the price drops to under $400, I'm going to buy them anyway because I want to try them out.

Just curious what your other speakers are?

Is $440 for each or pair? The thread said it's for each, but adorama page seems to be parit.

I would argue that it is personal preference. To be fair, I owned the predecessor, the Polk LSI 9's and I like the 530's better, but these are definitely a step forward as they are a 3 way.

In terms of parts, this uses the Vifa XT25 design, which is a great $30 tweeter. The S530 tweeter runs closer to $90, and the jbl woofer is probably a superior design. That said, this a 3 way, with good components. Two important notes, if you care about appearance, the Polk's are definitely finished nicer/more attractive, and they have a special diffuser on the back which allows them to be placed closer to the wall (if that is needed).
