Repped, I did this earlier when I saw the coupon code for the other red 5tb external worked for this one too.

I'll be using it as a backup for photo storage in addition to the cloud backup. Since I don't need portability and I'm not going to be putting in a lot of hours I'm fine rolling the dice on reliability vs a wd red.

For anyone interested in this. Apparently it's not a very good drive according to the last time it was posted.

You buy two then. One to use and the other for backup.

Im comfortable doing it because I have a cloud backup as well.

If this will be your only source of storage, I would chose a WD Red internal NAS drive and pop it in an external exclosure.

2 is 1, 1 is none and so on.

different brands, types, just keep buying a new drive while keeping the others in cold storage as you go along.

I would never rely on any hard drive to store irreplaceable photos. You should consider backing them up to a cloud. Google photos offers free high quality backups.

In addition to failure, a hard drive would not survive a house fire.

Our house was broken into years ago, and I had all of my photos on an external hard drive. When I set that as my backup, it never occurs to me that it could have been STOLEN!

Someone down the like suggested 3 backups. I couldn't agree more. Many folks don't realize how screwed they are until it's too late!
