Looks like a nice 2MP dome IP PoE camera

I like to keep dome cameras in locations protected from excessive exposure to UV / sun

For those who want to spend even less. there is a $20 720P Dahua dome:
( hint I think the 2MP is a better choice... )

Dahua Technology Lite Series 1.3MP Outdoor Network Dome Camera with 2.8mm Lens and Night Vision

Thanks for posting. Seems like a great deal.

Dahua spec says it's a starlight camera. But your description doesn't mention anything. Can you confirm? How does it preform comparing to IPC-HDW4231EM-ASE? N22AL12 seems to have a larger sensor (1/2.7") compares to IPC-HDW4231EM-ASE's (1/2.8").

Indeed 2ndLeaf and thanks for noticing!

Just searching for more specs on it... and this is what I found from the Dahua USA site:

"For challenging low-light applications, Dahua's Enhanced Starlight Technology offers best-in-class light sensitivity, capturing details in low light down to 0.005 lux. The camera uses a set of optical features to balance light throughout the scene, resulting in clear images in dark environments."

So very sweet deal imho - a US starlight model for $52.50

  • 1/2.7-in. 2 MP Progressive-scan CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Stream Encoding with Smart H. 265+ and Smart H.264+ Dual Codecs
  • 2 MP at 30 fps 30 fps, Maximum Resolution
  • Starlight Technology for Low Light Sensitivity
  • 2.8 mm Fixed Lens
  • Wide Dynamic Range and Day/Night (ICR)
  • Maximum IR LED Distance 30 m (98 ft) with Smart IR
  • Intelligent Video System
  • IP67 Ingress Protection and IK10 Vandal Resistance
  • PoE Support
  • Five-year Warranty (for products sold through an authorized Dahua dealer) ( iirc B&H is an authorized dealer... remember to double check if it matters to you.. )

imho at this price point, This would make a really nice camera for a covered front or back porch if there is some light on around the clock ( to keep the camera in color mode around the clock and reduce any issues with IR light bouncing within the dome back into the lens ). As this is a starlight you do not need as much light as older models or models which have smaller sensors.

would also work well indoors as mentioned, perhaps a garage camera? or to cover the entrances?

ID distance calculation, same as this model:
Dahua IPC-HDW4231EM-AS starlight fixed lens 1080p 1920x1080
w/2.8mm lens FOV H 110 degrees: 10 feet { area covered 95.94 sq feet covered }

So place the camera no further away than 10 feet from any potential suspect's face. Ideally try to mount it 6-8 feet high for a good angle to increase your chance for a good ID image.

For indoor placement, are there cheaper cameras I should be using? I keep placing outdoor cameras indoor.

Can this dome camera be wall mounted? Does that look weird?

Anyone know what the regular price is on this model? Might always be in the $50's:

Does it work with other brand NVR like Lorex, Laview, etc. Or I have to use a Dahua NVR? And vice versa

I already have Laview NVR system and thinking about getting the Lorex package from Costco (just because of its siren feature) but not sure about the interchangeability of the cameras and the NVR.

Many thanks.

Hi MrMonopoly,

Hard to find a much more affordable IP camera deal for a good camera. If you're tight on budget see the $20 720P camera.. personally I think this one is better for security purposes.

Hi rootdeals and crazy

Dahua OEM NVRs should work well -

Check if the camera has IVS - if so I like to pair it with a Dahua OEM NVR that also have IVS enabled ( ie - able to communicate the IVS stuff tot he camera ) - LaView Saturn NVR iirc has IVS.. Montavue..

non-IVS NVRs
see the Speco NVR deal post - NVR + HDD for $130 also from B&H

Some of the Lorex NVRs ( if Dahua OEM ) will work

Amcrest NVRs should work

Also check if it is ONVIF compliant - if so can use it on NVRs which are also ONVIF compliant, however you may not get as much functionality as pairing it with Dahua OEM NVRs.

VMS software: ( will also need a POE switch or PoE injector )
Dahua OEM smartpss software on a PC
also Blue Iris on a PC, Milestone on a PC

note: remember anytime you get an IP security camera that is not in a kit bundle you may need to set the appropriate IP and user / password info in the camera and the channel on the NVR that the camera will connect to.

Thanks MrMonopoly

Just checked out the tread. Looks like a new model at a good introduction price. I normally do not see Dahua US come out with a nice camera like this at such a nice price point. Normally they all seem a bit more. So it's good to see this one.

So far I have not seen IVS mentioned in the specs.
