I ran Plex free for about 6 months and then switch to Emby to compare.

My wife likes the Emby on Roku better. Setup etc was pretty similar but there is widespread discussion about the general direction of Plex not being great (may or may not be true).

That tone and that the Mrs. likes this tipped me.

I entered the code and it took me less than a minute to get it hooked to my 2 tuner HD homerun and the Emby interface for that is much nicer than the HD Homerun windows app.
(Emby support for local TV and TV DVR requires the premium)

Tried both. Greatly prefer Plex. Emby was extremely buggy on my system and didn't play well with anything on network. Plex has been rock solid.

Plex has DRM. It won't play certain mp4 files. Moreover, plex automatically reconnected to last casting session for chromecast like youtube app, which makes it casting to other chromecast devices not possible. You have to disconnect current session. Anyway, emby lets you cast to multiple sessions and reconnect to the previous session at your will. Moreover, it lets you search and download subtitles on fly. Anyway, use chase thru paypal for 5% cashback. True SD shopper...

Logged in just to up vote this. Thanks for posting it. Emby is way more configurable than Plex and just is overall a better solution than Plex. Grabbed this deal instantly

I prefer emby also.
I haven't used plex in a while, but one of the big things emby is / was better at is handling subtitles. Most files that I watch with subtitles will not require encoding on emby while they do on plex.
Emby used to have hardware transcoding without the paywall, but it looks like that changed at some point.

I run both.... Prefer Emby at this point as Plex is slowly moving more to streaming vs local media.... Kinda defeats why I have Plex to begin with.

Plex also requires online auth were Emby can be absolutely local.
